When you say "secondary side", you mean your meter shows no connection between the two sparkplug leads. That is a very common problem. The plug wires have a copper or steel wire core which eventually work hardens and fractures (in several places!) near the plugs. This is caused by the typical engine vibration, just look at the wires at idle, they're constantly moving. Back in the day, we used to cut the wires back as much as possible- you'd usually find it in 1" long pieces. If the wires becomes to short, just splice in another piece. That is easy! Use a 18-20ga electrical connector to splice the wire cores together, then apply RTV liberally and slide a 3" length of fuel line or other hose over that joint. It will not leak but work well.
As far as your newly acquired 5 wire coil is concerned : I thought the 86 X2 had 3 wires, and all subsequent models 87- 95 had 4. But I'm quoting from memory here and cannot help with that.
