650sx Cracked Tray

Paging @WFO Speedracer
The turf was loose on this 1990 650sx I acquired last summer. So I peeled it back to take a peek. Unfortunately, I found the foot tray smashed. Looks like someone tried to reinforce it with a thin, worthless strip of fiberglass.

What am I getting into here? I’m familiar with superjets. Is it the same kind of repair? Cutting, pulling out waterlogged foam, and fiberglassing everything back up?

Kawasaki foam is much better than what’s in a super jet. You will need to peel up the floor and let the foam dry for a while. Then everything can be bonded back together with epoxy.

SX hull is SMC , Superjets are Metton material , both are repaired exactly the same . with either any cracked damaged material has to go away , you cant reanimate dead tissue or dead SMC cut it back to an area that is not damaged , grind a very fairly shallow taper into the edges , the idea is to overlap non damaged material as far as you can, the shallower the taper the more contact you have with good material , repair it with fiberglass cloth and a decent epoxy resin .

I would use a fairly heavy Biax on that repair so you don't have to lay up a dozen layers of cloth , it doesn't have to be all that pretty but it does need to be strong..

As far as the foam you will just have to zip it open and see , I have had to re-foam a few Kawis as well but Kevbo is right they usually don't get as mushy inside as Superjets do.

You can always drill a few small holes at the bottom of the chines tilt it up sitting on it's ass and see what comes out of the hull .
