650sj questions from a newb

I have a few questions about my '91 650 superjet, I am a gearhead so don't think im stupid, just new to the ski world! Please bear with me, I have a few...

#1. There is a strainer/pickup for the stock bilge setup, I need a new one. Where can I get one from?

#2. I want to insert a T fitting somewhere so I can run the ski on land with the hose hooked up, where exactly do you T into the system and what kind of fittings do you use. I saw on my buddy's kawai they put a metal T fitting right at the head, I would prefer to something like this rather than have a T flopping around on one of the rubber hoses. Please attach pics of how you may have done yours.

#3. I have an aftermarket prop & rideplate of sort on this thing, but no idea what kind. How can I identify this? What is the procedure to swapping props? Do they slide right in place or do you need to do something to align them just right?

1. post a wanted ad here, or look on ebay, its simply a strainer, so you COULD make one if you had to. ( most folks isntall a 12v bilge pump in addition to this strainer) or wait on Boris to offer you his parts.

2. Im not sure, i dont have flush Tees on my skis. ( you have to have the ski running BEFORE turning the water on, or you will fill it with water, so be careful with this)

3. crawl under, look up thru intake grate with flashlight, and see markings, post a pic of it, and we can probably narrow it down.

You have to remove pump, 4 bults straight up into bottom of tray, then pump slides out back, a special tool is required to remove impeller, and a vice helps alot.

Welcome to the X!

650 square nose is one hell of a fun boat.

#1 By strainer pickup, you mean just the plastic box thing at the end of the hose ?
If so, you can have mine.

#2 I flush through my pissers (backflush) as it seams to do a better job at getting the system nice and clean.

#3 Post some pictures of your parts and someone will know what they are.
Why do you want to remove your prop?
Is it beat up ?

I'll have to get some pics up, thanks for the overwhelming response.

Boris - what parts you have to offer that mouthfullofwater is talking about? I would be interested in setting up a pump, I filled this thing with water last summer and about 2" of the rear were above the surface of the water (scary!!) Will these things actually sink or they have enough foam in the rear to keep them up? In the meantime I'll take that strainer off ur hands, you have a paypal acct or something so I can pay the shipping?

The prop isn't beat up, just wondering what all was involved in doing it. Sounds much like a larger inboard boat where you need a prop puller? The prop being centered in the pump just relies on the location of the shaft then?

As far as my ski goes, I don't know if engine work has been done or not, I know its fast as all get out (at least to me) and someone has for sure had the head off, so I wonder if it has been bored at all.... I know the exhaust and everything else appears stock.

If you use the plastic spacer that comes with the billet cone it will stay in there just fine.
It's like a bushing that you wedge between the shaft and cone.

Boris I can't send you a pm yet, so hopefully you will see this...

Wondered if you can help me out a bit more after having this discussion. I would like to add a pump and so called "pissers" to my sj. Someone mentioned you had parts or a setup for this?

Also, that screen/water pickup you said I could have, how can I pay you for the shipping on that? Send me a paypal or an address to send a check to or something...

Thanks for all the help. You like that paint job? I got that ski painted and ready to go for 600 bucks!! That seemed like a pretty good deal, I couldn't resist. As far as I am aware it is stock, with the exception of the prop, rideplate, and handlebars, pole, & throttle. I think it may have some engine work done on it though, because you can tell the head has definitely been removed, so I wonder if it is bored over a bit.

If I were to get rid of the siphon setup, how do you guys set up bilge pumps in your machines? DOes anyone have pics of theirs installed and where the put it? Do you remove the stock siphon setup then to avoid the risk of flooding your machine?

the head being removed probably indicates someone replaced the head gasket at some time in the past.

Ad a $10 attwood bilge pump from wally mart to go along with your factory siphon, and you will be good to go.

search function, and 'bilge'
