650 vs. 701 performance gap?

How much is there a performance gap between the 650 and 701 superjet? i'm trying to figure out if i should buy a 650 right now OR if i should save up more money (which may take until the fall) to buy a 701sn or 701rn.

im concerned that if i buy a 650sn right now, i'll regret not waiting for a 701 later.

also, if i get a stock 650, what are some of the minimal mods i'd need to put on it right-a-away? i've riden a stock rn sj and didn't like it. i've been told stock sj are lowsy so i wasn't sure if it was me not being used to riding superjets (i have always riden kawasaki standups) or just because it was stock suprejets. so what would the first mods be?

btw, i have done searches, but i wasn't able to find answers to this question directly. i'm sure this question has been answered plenty of times, but i'm tired of seaching and it's 11:55 pm and i need to go to bed. hoping to have some responses by the time i get to work tomorrow.

thank you in advance for your help!

I have 2 sn's I am running. One is 650 with riva air intake ride plate.
The other is 701 with protec exhaust, grate and rideplate.
The 701 just plain has more balls. It yanks you out of the water.
Both have close to the same top end, but who cares about running staight and fast.

I like riding both, but the 701 can pull me out of the messed up turns (too tight, or loss of water traction) so much easier.

I would never give up my summer to just have a 701, because the riding is too much fun.

Buy the 650 and get a used 701 cylinder/head later, you need something to do over the winter!

a 650 SN is a fine machine with mods and upgrades
the BEST upgrade is a 701, but mine is still a 650 with a pipe and head and I prefer it over a modded RN.
buy the 650 and learn to ride it then think about an engine swap or mods this winter

And a big Welcome to the X!!!!!

my 650 had a few things done to it that fit the 701 too, pipe, impeller, ignition, timing advance.

and the performance gap was really pretty slight.

the 701 IS stronger.

but not by much until you start porting, or if you goto a dual carb ( 62t case) 701.

stock 650 vs. stock 701.......not a huge power difference unless you plan on putting expensive aftermarket parts on it! if you plan on buying mods (exhaust/head) then get the 701.

dude, save your money and get a 701 RN. IF you buy the 650 square.. you will end up wanting a 701 roundie so just go ahead and get it from the start, dont waste any loot.

No way dude. If you can't get a 701 now due to money....GET THE 650!!!
Like cleetus and Tor*p*do said.....don't miss the summer! RIDE!!!
You can always upgrade...but lost time doesn't come back!
I had a 650 for a year and LOVED it! I upgraded, but riding is riding man! Don't miss out on any time if not needed! There'll be plenty of time for that when the injuries start coming into play.:crutches:

Buy it and love every minute of it!:headbang:

What ?

Seriously ?

My 650 with mods was stronger than a stock 701 but not by much.

Get the square and spend the summer on the water.
Over the winter build a nice motor, throw it into the square and keep riding.
A few years down the road (once you have your driveline sorted) pick up another square hull for $100 and keep having fun.

a STOCK 701 is very comparable to a VERY modded 650.

too bad youre not closer. i have 2 complete 650 engines that id let go for dirt cheap.

My first Yami was a pretty decently modded 701. To go from that to the stock 650 SN that I picked up later, I pretty much wanted to kill myself, the 650 was just such a turd.

The stock 650 to me was utterly worthless. It was not even fun, it was painfully slow through the entire throttle range. Honestly, if it were the first standup I ever rode, I would probably not be riding one today. My first standup was a Kawi 750 which obviously handled better than the SN, but also had a lot more pep all the way around.

My 650 now has a head, a pipe, lightened flywheel, roundnose pole, bored nozzle, and dry foam. I now just need to kill my rev limiter and it will be pretty much ok. Still, if I ride that and then get on my 701, I almost have to relearn how to ride. The 701 is just exponentially more powerful. So this winter, I'll be turning the SN into a real ski and putting a 701 in it.

Utterly worthless and you wouldn't even still be riding, huh?:hitwithrock: So you'd recommend him sitting out a year instead of riding? Good call. That'll help newbs get into the sport.
I don't buy any of that for a minute. Not trying to be an ass...but that whole speech sounded like :bsflag:
Not everyone has a buttload of cash, so wouldn't it be better to start out on what you can rather than not at all. That's what his thread is about.

I agree with you about the power difference...but you make it sound like it's a waste of time to ride with a 650. Better than a kick in the ass!

There is no replacement for displacement...but riding is riding. I go out with buddies on 440's still and they all have a blast. And it really doesn't matter what you start out on, you are gonna want something bigger. A 650 will turn into a 701 and a 701 will turn into a 760...it's evolution at it's finest.

Myself, I'd rather ride a 650 than nothing at all. I'd miss my 701 but i'd still ride it.

Take a Pamprin for Christ's sake. How can you call BS on my OPINION?? No one else has the balls to say anything bad about any SJ. It's like it's taboo or something. Sorry, but a stock 650 is a turd. Is it better than not riding, sure. Would I rather ride a stock B1, or a stock Kawi 750?? In a heartbeat.

Maybe if the dude is 125 lbs and has never ridden anything on land or water with more than 25 HP, he'd be entertained for half a summer. I'd be shopping for a pipe for that thing the day I bought it though. Hey, maybe my 650 was a particularly turdish turd because of the soaked foam, and everybody else's stock 650s are arm-rippers. That just might be the case. :grumble:
