650 to 701 swap

Curious, can a 1990 650 engine be swapped out for a 1994 701 engine pretty easily ? The 1990 is in a Superjet . The 1994 would be coming out of a Waverunner lll. I have not seen the Waverunner yet . Would the e box be the same also ? Size and dimensions for e box and engine ?

My 650 is running great but am still casually looking for donor 701 . Question: On a scale of 1-10, how much more power would a stock 701 have over a stock 650 in a stock 1994 SN ?

I’ll put it to you like this, a modded 650 (Pipe/head) is almost the same as a stock 701. So the 701 has so much more potential.

Mike W and others. This question is related to the OP's next step in this thread.

We bought a 1994 SN SJ which was in cherry condition. Comparing the engine in our recently purchased 1995 FX1, I realized (and confirmed) that the engine in the 1994 SN SJ is a 650 6m6, instead of the 701 61X which the ski was originally manufactured with. (Funny that the engine model/serial label on the intake manifold was missing.)

I am going to buy a 701 61X with electronics from a buddy and install it (probably won't even mention it to my wife who would be quite disappointed if she knew because she primarily rides it and considers it "her" ski).

I don't know if only the 650 6m6 was swapped in, or if the entire 650 6m6 exhaust system was also swapped in when the 650 6m6 engine was swapped in.

So, my question (and the OP's likely soon to be next question) is:

Is the exhaust system (manifold to exhaust, exhaust "chamber/pipe," waterbox, etc.) the same for a 650 and a 701?

If they are different, how can I tell which is which?

Can I temporarily run a 701 with a 650 exhaust system? Or will it damage a 701?

Thanks guys and gals for all your help. This has proven to be a very supportive forum.

Never thought about if the exhaust hookups were the same .
Did you end up going for the swap? I swapped a stock 61x in to my 650 and could tell a big difference. I then put a b pipe and round nose waterbox in it and could tell an even bigger difference! I’m 210lbs and it pulls me right out of the water. Not sure if stock 650 exhaust hooks up. The manifolds have different part numbers on yamahapartshouse.com, I just did the full swap. The carb swaps over as well with some new jetting. You won’t regret it and it’s really easy if you can find a good donor setup
