650 SX Help Please

Posted over on PWC as well, haven't got any help over there yet, so i figured i'd try here too: Pretty much thought my 650 was just tuned off, but here is some more info...

Went to work on my bogging issue today, and found out a pretty good secret, i think i am having a exhaust leak inside my hood. Which to me seems like that will make a motor bog, correct? Seems to run fine with the hood off, but after about ten minutes of riding, the bogging starts. So i shut it off until it'll refire. My guess is that it is burning all the clean air, then bogs when its get exhaust fumes sucked in, then after i shut it off enough clean air gets in there to run great for about another 10 min or so. I pulled my plugs and they looked to pretty right (brownish tint, and a lttle bit of oil around the ring) so i kinda ruled out the tuning making it bog.

Now my question... i do not have a flush kit on the ski, how can i find exactly where my leak is? Also, if i do have a exhaust leak, wouldn't water come through the leak and give me a little more water than normal in my hull after riding for a few hours? (If so, i think i just put two and two together!!)

ok if you have an exhaust leak it should be pretty loud (sometimes not as loud as others) and if its a slow enough leak where you can ride for 10mins then i'm guessing its more of a cracked hose then an actual connection coming loose. Its not all that hard so just start taking your exhaust hoses off and check them over. start with the one that goes from the tail cone to the 90 at the water box, then take the 90 off the water box, then do the hose from the exhaust-exit to the water box, then the 90 that hose connects to.
If all those hoses check out to be good then undo the connector for youe tail cone and see if thats bad, and they do go bad very quickly if the exhaust gets a lot over normal operating temps for too long (could have happened from the last guy).
Then if thats good the only one you have left is the connector from the Head Pipe to the downpipe...check that and if all those are good then its prob a hole in the exhaust system somewhere and you need to ride it around without the hood and look closely for where the leak is or listen carefully for the leak.

why not make a flush kit, go down to hardware store get a hose attachment and a 3/8" ( i think) tit to stick in one of your cooling lines (on my sx its in the head) and run it like that and get a soapy water spray bottle and start looking, buts it probably going to be a small leak, also double check all you connections on exhaust on the manifold and the pipe.

This happened to me on my old 650sx. I found the seal that connects the exhaust manifold to the pipe dry rotted - easy fix. The soap test looks like a good start...

Also check the 2 rubber hoses leading to the waterbox and out the waterbox,
You might have to take them off to examine.

Ski did the same thing until I replaced the hoses from autozone baby.
