Super Jet 650 SN - dies after a few minutes takes 10 min to restart - no spark / electrical?

Got a '91 SN 650 superset. It's bone stock except for added a pisser and a SS prop. Just rebuilt the carb in the spring and took it out last week to tune it in. Had it running on the water for about 2 minutes and came in to adjust the carb and it wouldn't restart. If I let it sit for 10-15 minutes it would start up again but won't run long.

Today I put in new plugs and added a pisser. I'm also using fresh gas/oil.
When running it on the hose I can verify that the cooling is working correctly. I ran it for 2-3 minutes on the hose idling and revving it up. It seemed to run fine, the head and exhaust were lukewarm/cool to touch. Then the ski died again. I pulled the plugs and they were fairly clean, checked and I have no spark.

This would happen last summer as well. I would be out riding and when I'd come in to switch riders we couldn't get the ski started again for 10-15 minutes. After that it would start and ride fine. Not every time just intermittently.

I have cleaned the contacts for the kill switch/lanyard and re-assembled. It was working well but needed cleaning every 1-2 months last year.
Also before I started it today i checked the spark and I did have spark but it wasn't a big fat spark, seemed kinda weak but I really don't know what to compare it to.

I've searched for other people with this issue but everyone that has/had it never posted their fix.
Has this happened to anyone else? I'm wondering if my coil is shot? (just a guess) any ideas?

Thanks

i had this exact issue two years ago. i cleaned the killswitch and it was perfect...for a hour or so. then i was back to square one. i put in a new start/stop switch and it has been perfect ever since. im not saying its not the cdi. just my experience. good luck, could be either one.

I swapped the whole switch and harness or whatever you want to call it. I would try whatever you have to swap laying around. I know some people are rebuilding the switches now. I saw a few post about it ..

And as far as testing the cdi electrically you can do so. There is thread somewhere on it. My phone is to slow to get it for you at the moment. But with your problems im not sure its going to test correctly because its only when it gets warm. It could also be your stator so test that to while your in here. Hopefully somebody that remembers the ohm readings to look for chimes in soon. If nothing reads bad I say replace the stop start first as they are the cheapest. Then cdi or stator.

byeai After I've run it and its warmed up it dies. I can still crank it no problem but I have no spark. If i let it sit for 10-15 min the spark comes back.

marker motorsports It would be Ideal but unfortunately I don't have a buddy to swap cdi's with. If I can find a schematic I'd like to test it with a meter.

myblackz28 Thanks for the info. I'll hunt around for those posts on testing the CDI. I saw on this post: http://www.greenhulk.net/forums/showthread.php?t=106410 that the guy had similar symptoms to mine and it ended up being his coil. I ordered a new coil a few days ago so I'm going to try that when it gets here and go from there.
Do most people use a lanyard or avoid the kill switch with a low idle?

go to the tech section---find & download the superjet manual--chapter 7 (Electrical) has all the resistances for ohming out the cdi, also the stator and voltage reg--its a good place to start--while in the e-box clean & inspect all electrical connections--especially grounds--clean up any & all corrosion

Thanks r6487 that superset manual is gold. I replaced the CDI and the ski runs great.

Had it out for a day and a half until I found out my battery wasn't charging. Seems that the regulator in the electrical box isn't testing out and my battery isn't holding a charge anymore so I'm replacing that and the battery next. Seems like the summer of never-ending electrical problems.

Thanks for all the help.

You may want to consider getting your stator rebuilt in the near future. It has been my experience that once you start to have electrical issues like failing CDI's and regulators, the stator is the real culprit. Newer components seem to correct the issue but the results may be shortlived. Once you rebuild or replace your stator, you may find that your old cdi works just fine again so don't trash it just yet either.

John at Jetski solutions offers a complete Stator rebuild for $170. He also replaces the charging coil with a beefier unit with more windings that offers 10% more charging energy. It sounds like alot of money but his service is priceless if it means your ski runs perfect everytime.

I got so fed up with chasing electrical gremlins in skis that I started sending John my entire electrical system for service and I swear by it. The last 2 skis I built had the entire electrical system bulletproofed by John before they ever fired up and they haven't skipped a beat in over 2 seasons of 100% saltwater riding.

Thanks OCD. I have a buddy at work and another in MO that suggested JSS as well. I may send it to him this winter if I tear into my ski. I did save my CDI as I have a bad habit of not throwing anything out (need an original aluminum chewed up prop?)

I did swap out the voltage regulator and got a new battery and it has been running like a top ever since.

Thanks for all the advice, hopefully this thread will help someone with similar issues.
