300/440/550 650 Engine - compatible starters?

Hi folks,

I'm looking to get some information on starters. I've not had to tackle the issue yet, but I'd like to pick up a spare starter before I have a problem with my existing one. It's looking a little worse for wear.

I've heard that for reliability I should use a Sea Doo starter. I don't know which one to get and I don't know which ones are compatible.

Can someone shed some light on that for me please?

I'd like to find out where I can get a starter and what ones will work.

Also, if I ride it in salt water, is there anything I should do to the starter or the connection to make sure it won't corrode? The housing of my existing starter looks like it's spent some time in salt.

I have herd some stuff about using sea doo starters but I cant say I ever had tried so I am not sure. If I were you I would just look on ebay till you find a cheap starter out of a 650. Or you can have someone that knows what there doing rebuild yours and it should out last the life of your ski.
As for saltwater if your starter itself is rusting on the housing you might want to pull it out get all the rust your can off and shoot it with some fresh paint. As for the electical connections coat them with dielectic grease before you ride each time.

I tried to get some dielectric grease last weekend but the two places I went didn't have any.. Totally odd.

I plan on covering my electrical connections with it. I want to get the ski ready for salt.

i think you are getting the wrong info...

you can use a seadoo starter, in the older 440/550 motors. they are designed better, and crank faster than the original kawi ones from back in the day.

your 650, has a different starter, and will not interchange with a seadoo starter.

John I will have to correct you here,you can use a Seadoo starter off of a 951 engine,they are the same as the 650-750-800 starters,also the Polaris starters for the Fuji engines are the same except for the rear end caps.

hello terry. i have also heard this, but have not persoanlly tried it, so i cannot say for sure.

i would also think, "if" they did interchange, the seadoo one really would be no better. he was asking about "reliability".

i was just thinking of the old weak early 440/550 starters, and the seadoo ones that fit those are much better. ( stonger, and last longer)

I did a lot of work on my ski over my weekend and the starter thats in it has seem some salt water. It's not looking to healthy, but it's working.

Is there a rebuild kit for a starter?
