Blaster 61x case problem

I got a blaster at a deal i couldnt pass up but it has some issues also. It is a 61x salt water riden motor. When i got it the guy said it needed some things. First was that the starter just spun without engaging the bendix. I get into the case and find 2 broken case cover bolts and a trashed bendix, flywheel and stator. After replacing all those parts and getting one broken bolt out i couldnt get the other broken bolt out. I can get a new case for what im getting charged to tap that last bolt out. BUT im wanting to make sure the motor will run before spending a ton of money on this ski. My problem is that my bendix wont stay straight in my case. After turnning the motor over a lot of times you hear this metal on metal sound and open the case up and the bendix isnt in line on the case side but is still in the case cover slot. The last bolt that i couldnt get out is on the bendix/starter side. Could that bolt that is missing let the case flex and allow the bendix to become out of line? When i put my bendix in the case/starter side slot it still wiggles and moves a bit. Should the bendix be tight tight in this case side slot or should it have a little movement?

Any thing would help me out besides saying just buy a new case. I will next winter if the blaster seems to be something i wanna spend money on. please ask questions if you dont understand and i will try my best to explain dif.

Thanks in advance.

What shape is the bushing that the bendix goes into on the cases ?
Same goes for the bushing on the front cover plus that one should have a spring and a washer.

got a spring but when i turn the motor over i still hear the noice. I dont think the bendix is sliding teeth to teeth with the flywheel. is this possible? i took the cover off and tried to turn the bendix into the flywheel and the teeth done line up.

Any ideas?

little more info-

i got the blaster to turn over and start but the first hit of the start switch and it started right up. When i tried to start it again i got this metal on metal sound and then no fire. got into the e-box and the fuse was blow. Any ideas on why i keep blowing fuses?

take out the bendix and make sure it extends and retracts smoothly
if not, replace it
sound like the bendix is shot

although one time i did take the cover off and the bendix was stuck open i the teeth of the flywheel. messing with it now and the bendix was loose when i put it in the case side the first time now that i put the spring in the cover the bendix is very snug in the case side and doesnt move at all.

check the brass bushing in the flywheel cover
it may be trashed allowing the bendix to wander
search - they can be pulled with a blind bearing puller and repalced

Would a bad starter make the bendix stick open? When I get into the case the bendix is stuck open after a few times I turn it over and the noice stops the starter spins.

Yes, if its not turning over fast enough the bendix can stick out and hang on the flywheel like that. Your starter or battery may be toast or close to it. Swap out and try if you can. I dont know what the grinding noise could be unless its the sound of the starter going out... because you say it has a new bendix and opens and springs back nicely.

Good call...

Take the bendix when you have it out and make sure its good and clean, then soak it overnight in ATF tranny fluid in a soup can or something... Then let it "drip dry/drain" upside down for awhile and wipe it down a bit then install.

Good luck and post back with what you find!

Oh, also you dont have to take the motor out to replace the starter, just the pipe and Ive seen it done with the pipe on, but thats a real bitch.. But just sayin whatever's easiest..
