550sx SURF MOD Questions

Hi Guys,

Ive decided to go ahead with modifying my 550sx into barrel rolling machine. Its an ex race ski so its all good in that department.

I wanted to work on the hull, fiberglass work and steering pole questions. I ll just jump right into it please.

Goals: Reinforce the hull and pole and other necessary parts.
Questions: Whats materials are best and lightweight options? and how many layer of this? eg 3 layers of fiberglass? I heard carbon is an option. again please claify this for me.

also, mould had accumulated over the years on the hull, will a buff with a cutting agent remove than and brighten the paint or plastic?

thanks guys,

Hey mate, yeah as for the mould, a good polish will get that nasty stuff right off. As for the reinforcing, rip the engine, tank and w/bok out. turn ski on its side and reinforce the whole side from top to bottom, you will need to use epoxy resin as it an smc and not fibreglass. i used the thinnest biax cloth and did two layers, also try and get right up the front and do the nose also. I didn't bother with the floor of the engine bay and no probs yet. Also get yourself a limiting rope so the pole doesn't over extend forward and snap off. make yourself some surf fins for the back end, use a toploader scoop grate for the rough water, get a frogskin airfilter cover to stop water getting in, and maybe chuck a SBN 44 on that badboy also. That should just about do it. All the best and enjoy. Oh.....Post pics too dude.

would you mind elaborating on using epoxy resin not polymer resin? ( the cheapest one- because i already bought it! and i bought chop strand.....is that okay? it just feel more general thus safer to me....

ive pretty much stripped it , even the pump, had to install a new steering cable.
