300/440/550 550 will only start then given throttle.

Im working on this one 550. But really every piston port engine has been like this for me. I have a fresh carb on it. Tuned it off the mikuni manual. I dont want to lean out any more. It runs well when your riding, no bogs and picks up pretty good for a stock 550. compression is 95psi in both cylinders, thats with my harbor gauge that always reads a little low, but right now my matco gauge is broken so its all I can go by. Anyone solve this issue before? to me I think its too rich if it needs all that air to start, but once started its ok. Idles alright too. Ski is stock with a west coast F/A. Any info would be great thanks.

The issue is not fixable with that carb , the port for the low speed circuit is too low in the carb, the gas drains out the port into the carb throat, flooding the engine when ho, on later model carbs the raised the position of that port in the carb to rectify the problem.

That makes sense. Well now I started it in my shop and its popping thru the intake. Like a back fire sort of. I tried checking timing but it was very erratic. Im not sure if its my old timing light or not. set at top dead center, set up my pointer on the T. start engine and rev to what I think is 6000 rpms and sometimes its inbetween the t and f, but most of the time its off. I removed flywheel and it wasnt loose and the wooddruff key is still there. So im not sure whats going on. Maybe me 'tuning' the carb. Im not sure why the timing looked to be so erratic.
