300/440/550 550 trouble

just bought a 1985 550 for $150 buck. havent really looked into much yet but i have a quick question. when i take the plugs out and hit the start button it seems to turn over fine but when i put them back in it turns over very very slow and wouldnt start.any thing would help thanks.

Sounds like you have a weak battery or a starter that is going bad. At least it seems like you have some compression if it makes a difference when you put the plugs in.

+1... def week starter or battery...could also check all the cable connections for corrosion and make sure they are tight. i believe there is two positive terminals on the riders left side of the electrical box. and if i remember right the ground runs from the battery to the intake manifold. move em all around to check for loseness, corrosion, or breaks....

Yup that's how mine was. Put a new starter on it and a new battery and it worked fine

ditto, had to do the same with my 550..... you can do i quick test with a jump start form another battery, if it cranks then you know its just the battery...... gl
