300/440/550 550 starting problems

I have bought a new battery and am trying to wire the ski to the starter properly. Where does the neg connect to .. straight to the block? when I do that i have connection to the starter but it goes really slowly.? Its a brand new battery could it be low? or Do i have a bad connection? Looking from the front of the ski to the back which direction should the flywheel turn clockwise or counter clockwise.

neg cable to the block if it turns slow watch the starter because it will start to smoke then you need a new starter. they turn slow when they are dieing. the brushes in the starter don't push enough electricity to the starter motor and they get hot and smoke then stop working. you can have them rebuilt but it is cheaper to buy one off ebay or watercraftsuperstore.

could be other things but this sounds like your problem it happens to starters that are over 20 years old all the time

the - cable connects to the intake manifold upper rear bolt.

id clean all your connections up first but here are some tests you can do to i.d. high resistance (bad) connection

put your volt meter on the battery - and the + starter lug. crank it and read voltage.

put the volt meter on the battery - and battery + crank it and read voltage.

the two reading should be vary close to the same. anything more than about a .25 volt differece is too much.

if the voltage drop is more do the same check with the + lead on each side of the starter solinoid. when you start to see batery voltage look for the problem just on the other side of the good test point.

to do voltage drop on the - side put the - volt meter lead on battery - and the + lead on a clean spot on the block. this test should show 0 volts or vary close. if it is much more than 0 you have a high resistance conection. work your way back to the battery with the + lead till you see 0 volts and you found your problem.
