550 reed motor vs port engine

i want to build a 550 for my girl friend. I was told that the older ported motors are junk and only buy a newer 91 and up because the new 550s had motors with reeds. is there a reason to stay away from the ported motors vs the reed motors.

thanks for the help

The reed motors are better performers. The port engines are cheaper and have huge amounts of a/m parts. Buy a superjet.

had a super jet. a 2001 . sold it. bought a x2 .

is there a huge con to having a port engine. my budget is 500. im not building a crazy ski for my girl. she doesn't need it.

Although a PP engine can be more temperamental they are less expensive and easier to come by. If the engine is strong and the carb is a SBN that is tuned correctly it will fit the bill nicely. Also maybe a 650sx is something to consider. Good luck with your search.

If this is a ski for your GF, reliability and ease of operation Are key. Thus the recommendation for a 550 reed ski/motor is spot on in my opinion. Piston port motors can be made to be reliable but I have found reed motors to be more Crisp, reliable, and dual piston rings add longevity.
