550 Engine Prices

I have a 550 sx in here that a customer wants me to repair,I opend up the engine and found a rust bucket,so I go take a peek on SBT's site and the price on a 550 std engine is $745.00 are you freaking kidding me? Just for comparison a 750 KAWI IS ALSO $745.00,am I the only on not following the logic there?I will be loking for a used engine to repair his ski with,hell for $745.00 he can buy a running 550 or two!

Yes. For 750 you can buy a running 1. :biggrin:

Both engines have a crank/cases/pistons/head/etc, it costs the same to rebuild a 550 crank as a 750 in terms of labor, same labor for boring it out, pistons are the same, etc, so it makes sense that it would cost the same really.

Now, what it's worth is a different story.

if its really rusted they might not take it full value as a core either.

start hunting ebay, but really even if you get a deal the labor cost of install is going to exceed the value of the ski.

I think I am going to fix him up with some parts I have here,I bought a 550 years ago and never did anything with it,this would be a good home for it,it gets it out of my way and gets another standup rider on the water and money for the ski back in my pocket,thats a win,win,win situation for sure.

No actually looking at my parts book and theirs the pistons are cheaper ,the crank rebuild kit is cheaper by $70.00,you know dang well a 550 didn't bust a crankcase and need welding either.
