300/440/550 300SX Shudders When Trying To Start

Let me give a little background....

I bought this ski for my buddy's son, he just turned 9. So I ripped the whole thing apart and gave it a complete overhaul. The guy I bought it from said it needed a new bendix.

So after doing some research, I found that this motor doesn't even have a bendix, but yet it uses a sprag clutch and a starting gear. So after pulling off the back engine cover, I found that there wasn't any oil in it and upon further inspection I found the starting gear assembly had come apart. The snap ring was off the back of the gear assembly and the gears were no longer meshing because the starting gear had floated on the crankshaft.

So I visually inspected everything, cleaned all the parts and put it back together (using plenty of 10w-40) during assembly. After I had it all back together I put the cover back on, added oil and thought I was ready to rock..... Not so fast.

When I try to start the motor it turns over, however it will shudder. I think this is being caused by the sprag clutch slipping. So I took it back apart and inspected everything again. This time I noticed the inside of the clutch race was somewhat wavy, having high and low spots. Would this cause the sprag clutch to grab intermittently?

I'm thinking this is the culprit and my solution will be to machine the inner race just enough to clean it up that way i have a smooth/uniform surface for the sprag to grab. I inspected the sprag clutch and the sprags themselves and both look fine. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any info or advice you guys can provide... Stand ups are still new to me as I have always worked on the 3cyl couches and 4stroke monster skis. Now I've got an SXR and a 300SX in my garage.

Also, can anyone point me in the right direction to find the service manual for this thing?

ive never owned a 300 so maybe i am wrong, but i dont think its any different then other 2 strokes. you dont put oil in the bottom end and especially not the front cover where the flywheel and stator are.

the 300 has the flywheel at the front of the motor and the starter and starting gear in the back. The starting gear, sprag clutch and hub require oil.
