Well, I ended out purchasing a 29er, the Giant Talon 2. I really like it compared to my 26" Giant. My 15 yr old son is happy too, cuz he inherited a nice bike. Put about 85 miles on it this season. Well worth it, the 29er rolls smooth for sure!

Looks nice, just change the pedals out for either some good platforms or clipless if you're used to them.

I ran clipless for a while but for my type of riding and the slight benefit in pedaling efficiency, they weren't worth it so I went with some good flats and flat-soled shoes. I run Wellgo B38 pedals but think they are discontinued.

I use crank brothers. There are two angles of in/out adjustment and they allow your foot to float. Plus they make multiple types of petals from super easy in/out 'Egg Beaters' to big flat platform petals. http://www.crankbrothers.com/ I run an old version of the 'Candy' for the added footprint with my soft soled shoes. If you have hard shoes, egg beaters are superb for ease of entry.
