1991 Superjet Advice

ok i have this 1991 Superjet.
its the sj650, stock 6m6 engine, stock carbs, stock everything.

i just had the carb rebuilt and had to replace a spline that stripped, but other than that it feels super strong and like brand new. its been in my family since it was bought brand new. it was given to my bro and when the spline stripped i paid to have it fixed and it was given to me.

anywho, im looking to give a bit of pep and was looking for advice, im pretty mechanically inclined(rebuilt a car and a quad), and i can fabricate a good amout of stuff, only limited by my tools and $$.

i ride recrationally with a few tricks here and there, but i feel like im lacking a few things. first i see everyone has some sort of foot holds, i think that would definitly step my game up a notch, however im not fond of glassing and it looks like thats what its gonna take to get some footholds setup.

i was recomended a wedge deal and something about relocating a steering cable, however im not quite sure i gotta research that.

performance wise i know its recomended to just swap to a 701 and having both engines on different craft they look identical so im sure swapping should be easy but that requires some money i dont have at this moment. so my next question does anyone have a general list of swappable part between the 701 and the 650? i know theyre almost exactly the same but the newer models have nicer parts so i figured some stock 701 parts might be cheaper than buying aftermarket.

i think the cheapest options for me is a impeller and maybe some sort of pipe, but finding both cheap are a challenge.

one and my last request, ive been searching and will continue to search using the search feature but anyone know a good link to some how-to's and installs. im very visual so seeing installs and mods done help 1000% and i they also eliminate any smaller things i may overlook if i see what others have done.

thanks everyone. ill get some pics up soon, my website is down right now but ill work on a page when i get the chance, for now heres a few pics.

--Chris

p.s. i attached the few pics i have right now of my ski, the lakes in the pics are millerton and modesto res. i want to paint it, but im trying to decide on a design, plus im thinking vinyl might be cheaper since i have access to a laser and a cutter.

I think I know source for a 650 SJ b-pipe, I was told the adjusting screws are siezed though. I have never tried to undo these so I don't know how hard a job it is. Pm me if you're interested, I can check on it next week (after the Ozarks Invasion is over).

The b-pipe and a head, and you'll be cookin'.

Are those graphics stock ???

Bad a$$ !!!

Man you got a good looking stock square. I like the graphics! Keep your eyes peeled for parts for sale on this site.

Yes and no, the graphics came like that stock, however it was yellow instead of blue, my dad changed it from yellow to blue a long time ago. i was thinking of painting it but i dont want it to look cheap, so im thinking of leaving the style the same but switching the solid blue to a metal flake or candy blue and the grey to either a silver metallic or possibly using chrome. ive wanted to use chrome since our first kawasaki TS back in the 80's but thanks to ebay you can get rolls of chrome decal vinyl on the cheap.

hmm, whatll a head do? i havent worked on two strokes much so thisll be my first 2 stroke, sounds easy enough but im not sure a head would give me the oomph a impeller could.

ive been looking at a b-pipe, but you need two pieces right, the b-pipe and like a exhaust manifold type of deal right? ive seen some b-pipes but no manifolds. if the price is right i definitly might be interested, screws can be tapped out and re threaded so thats no prob.

Dont be afraid of glassing (assuming you have never done it before).
As far as footholds, even if they turn out ugly as heck, you just cover it with turf.
Footholds are very useful for certain tricks. If you want to save money you can make your own as I did. They were actually toeholds, but still very effective.

hi, welcome to the X!
good looking square.
one of the best mods is free, modify your stock nozzle for quick turn:biggthumpup:
photos at the end of my build
which is here http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/28797

read your whole thread, nice build, i wish i still had my own garage, i would totaly be able to do more, but stuck in the city in a condo i dont have anywhere to work. i have to drive down to near fresno where my parents have a nice big house with alot of garages that i could work in. when i need to work i go down there where my toys are stored and work with my tools i left there.

should i search for the steering mod for more info or are there any more info to it, from the two pics i saw on your threat it looks like it relocated the ball closer to the nozzle to make the throw shorter? i can see the value but wont it shorten the length you can turn the nozzle. ill check it out when i go back down, i think were going back to the lake either this weekend or next.

i have not much experiance with glassing, i understand its strength and benifits, i allways feel like the one i do would end up like paper mache and just break. i gotta get my balls up and just buy a pint or so and start playing with it. what do you mean by toe holds, got any pics?

that is all there is to it drill hole and move attachment point
then adjust the barrel connector so you dont go around in circles with the handlebars straight
by moving the pivot point closer to the nozzle, it turns much quicker!:arms:

cool ill try that out, i ll see if i can find a tap so i can just screw the ball joint into whichever hole i want in case i decide to switch back.

so i ordered a few small things this past week, i got a kick wedge from hydroturf, and some new grips(the stock ones are a bit hard on my hands) and im trying to get a flame arrestor and adaptor. nothing major yet, the engine is still running pretty strong so until i find someones used pipe or ride plates for a price that my poor a$$ can afford, ill stick to my current project. i took off all the cf numbers, and registration sticker(from 07) and im replacing it with chrome vinyl, and mixing in some blue candy for a chrome/candy stripe mix instead of the current grey/blue stripes. pics coming...

is this similar to the mod your talking about? that bracket looks easy enough to fabricate, or i wonder if its easier to just do what your talking about.

no need for the fancy bracket
just drill the lever already on the nozzle

word, ill put that on my list before this weekend.

How about some better pictures of those graphics.
Did your dad replace the whole set or just the yellow ?

you really like those? theyre really the stock stickers except he repainted over the yellow with blue spray paint, its pretty suprising that it lasted so long. also if you havent allready noticed the front nose piece is missing its because its a new piece. the last one disappeared out of no where. i did a submarine and when i came back up it was gone.

i attached a pic i took of it last weekend as i picked it up. the second pic is at my bros while i was removing the decals, registration tags and Cf numbers. and the last pic is a teaser of how far i got, i got the chrome on so far, but am still working on cutting out all the other parts i need, then i gotta mask it and throw on the blue.

anyone got any pics or files of some graphics for the superjet, i was able to find a couple yamaha logo and the tune fork logo for yamaha. but i kinda wanted that same old school superjet logo that came on the superjet.

im setting up the Cf numbers right now on the laser, ill get some pics after im done.

the ones you buy utilize 4 bolts that bolt to the chasis, pretty simple install, however those are both class I and get in the way of my exhaust. so i had to design a custom one utilizing the same bolts but it shifts it a bit to allow the exhaust. then i threw on a class III reciever because tongues are easier to find in that size. the best part, i get to get my ski to the lake with avg. 30mpg!!

update on the ski. i cut out vinyl on the laser, sorry i took the vinyl out of the laser before i remembered to take pics. i almost got all the way finished with the new graphics except i ran out of pinstripe for the left side. i got the yamaha back on the hood but i forgot to cut out the superjet decal for the sides.
