1987 Kawasaki 650 SX - HELP!!!

Hey guys!

I picked up an 87 650Sx that sat for about 10 years compression was approx 145 per cylinder. My question to you is this...should it smoke like a chimney (50:1) or is this a side effect of it sitting idle for 10 years? It is sea worthy as we've had it on out on the river for about 30 mins on monday. I was told to put some ATF if the fly wheel/bendix (how much is some; can i put too much in it).

My main concern is that their is a loud rattling sound coming from the pump area.........sounds like something is lose and going to fall off....have any of you other guys experienced this? I'm planning on taking a look at it this weekend but tought i would poll the "X" prior to doing so.

did you block off/remove the oil injection?

run fresh gas next time out.
look in pump with flash light and see if any rocks & debris is in it.

yes the previous owner had someone remove the oil injection so it's now a premix ski

i put fresh gas and oil in the ski on monday......previous over had emptied tank prior to storage.

thanks i'll check the pump out with a flash light very well might be something in their as i did find a mouse nest under the hood........thankfully they only chewed the starter wire

it's a horrific sound i'm talking about.....not sure how it sounds on the water as i wasn't the one riding it.....

thrugh hull bearing may be going out. when it does, your riding will be over until you replace it

Pull the driveshaft or pump, the noise is probably the splines needing some grease. Also if the pump bearings are shot it will make noise, and as stated the firewall bearing. Don't worry about the bendix, but a shot of wd40 in there every now and then does not hurt.

I had one and my pump sounded like that too.

My 650 pump wear ring started to swell and it sounded REALLY REALLY BAD. Aweful metal on metal grinding. I'm betting thats what the sound you hear is, if its VERY loud. If its just rattling its normal for kawi pumps.

i only paid a few hundred for the ski; it's basically a beginner ski for my friends to play around on........i've got an 05 SJ that i'm trying to figure out the carbs on it now

My 750 pump sounds like it is coming apart on dry land, nice and quiet and fine in the water.
If yours acts like this, probably normal.
