1985 JS550 pump grease

Hey everyone just picked up a 1985 js550. Going through everything. Just removed the pump cone and it was full of dark grey grease. But slightly less thick than normal grease. It would have started spilling out if I left it sit sideways. It almost had a slight gear oil smell to it. But maybe I’m imagining things haha. My question is when I put this back together do I fill that cavity up with normal marine grease? Then use the zerk under the black 8mm hex cone to keep the grease topped off every few rides? Thanks everyone. I have the Clymer manual on order also!

Yes. But you'll only need a couple pumps each season so long as your seals are good.

So on initial “fill up” just pack it full of marine grease and re install the cone? It was full when I pulled it apart

Yea. I'd dog all that other stuff out of there as best you can and replace it with a quality waterproof grease. Chances are that's been in there since it left the factory.

Awesome! Thanks!! Yeah I’d definitely looks like it was the original stuff. Dark grey and not the normal consistency of grease. Also the black plastic 8mm cone cap broke when I was undoing it (new one on order) so you know it hasn’t been done regularly. Thanks for the help!
