Freestyle 180 Nose Stab & Almost Died !!!!!!

A few weeks ago I was playing around our lake as usual and started to learn a new trick, a 180 Nose Stab. After numerous attemps I ran across a deep hull boat. I jumped his wake a few times and he and his son seemed to be enjoying the bad show. I decided to really give it a good shot........ The next thing I know I'm sitting in a lawn chair with a nurse beside me and 2 dozen others.
According to Brian 'God Bless You' Smith, I got the most height of all my attemps but fell into the water. He notice that I wasn't coming up so he turned his boat around and found me face down in the water. He jumped in and rolled me over. His son threw him a rope and they pulled me to a nearby kids summer camp that had 2 full time nurses.
After a 1/2 hr. ambulance ride, emergency room visit and 2 CAT scans, the doctor handed me a clean bill of health. [sanity was questionable].

I must have landed face first into my handpole [RRP] which has virtualy no padding. All I ended up with was a huge lump on my forehead, fat lip and a sore nose.
Now I wear a MX helmut at all times.

Glad you made it okay! I don't know if it was on this forum but there's a video of a guy who had a helmet cam on while skiing up here in Alaska. He was riding a fresh line down and got caught in an avalanche and trapped. The video shows the snow blacking out the camera lense and him a bit panicked. Then his buddies rescue him.

I only tell that story cause you would've had a crazy video to show us!

I was working on my re-entries this weekend and hit a wave wrong and had my ski pop up and come right over and land on my head. My helmet took the blow very nicely. Jarred my neck pretty good but nothing like it could have been.

It's sure nice to just shake it off versus the alternative...which would have been very close to your story. I've always said I wear my helmet for my teeth but I think I have to change my tune a bit now.

Our brains are very fragile. I was wakeboarding a month ago, I lost my balance in the air and landed with the nose of my board first and got slammed. I ended up getting life flighted and spent a total of 5 days in the hospital. I suffered a traumatic brain injury called an acute subdural hematoma where my brain had a mid line shift of 6mm (meaning it moved 6mm to the left), and 5mm of bleeding on the left side of my brain. I'm still healing from it. And im lucky i didnt have to undergo surgery. Our heads are sooo fragile, take care of them!!

I did not need to read this. I psyche myself out every time I slam on a front edge on my wakeboard that I have a subdural hematoma. It sure as hell feels like it. Then the whiplash starts the next day. Thank God it hasn't happened. Now I will have more to think about next time I do it.

What were the progression of symptoms after the fall?

I dont remember a thing but my brother said I took off my board and said i was done. I got to the swim step and sat there with my eyes wide open not saying a word, I was breathing weird (I also got a partial collapsed lung) so my other brother took off my life vest to help me breath, then i started to sink. my brother was yelling "karley helloo!" and i was just staring not saying a word, he thought i was :):):):)ing around with him, until he picked me up and i was just dead weight... so then he knew something was wrong and went full speed to get help. soo soo scary. my brother thought i was dead.
I had the worst head ache of my life for 24 hours a day for 3 weeks. plus being nausious. the doctors said i could have a head ache for 3 months to a year. it was the worst month of my life, but now i am doing much better, i get a ct scan next week to see if the blood is all gone. be safe out there wakeboarding, it is dangerous!
