'14 RN My First Build: Refoam, Footwells, ect.

So I'm doing a full refoam cause I think mine has taken on some water. So when I get the old foam out I'm going to mold the xps as close as I can to the foot wells when installing everything back, that way I won't have to shove any expanding foam in there!

Well holy cow guys. Turns out trying to graduate college, taking care of a puppy, planning a wedding, planning a move to Michigan, finding a house in Michigan, and jumping through all the hoops to get hired at the job that pays for all of this takes up all of my time!

So! After my long hiatus I finally put a little more work in this weekend and am finally making some great progress. Last time I updated I had just cut out my footholds, well I got a great deal farther, so let's get into it.

First thing I did was take a trip to home depot as I was unsatisfied with using the Dremel. I was burning through both bits made to side cut fiberglass and those little disks made for fiberglass, and that was just for those two little footholds! I did some research and found a couple guys using a Dremel oscillating tool. So I tried it. Wow... I used a heavy duty multipurpose half circular saw bit with it and it is the cleanest, fastest, thinnest line I could have asked for. Cut through my tray like butter and took half the time as one foothold.

After I got the tray out (which cut my hand up quite a bit..worth it) it was time to defoam. I used a mixture of screwdrivers, wire brush on a power drill, and some pent up anger/rage to get all of the foam out. At the beginning of defoaming I was a little nervous that it was going to be unnecessary, but once I got halfway down I found quite a bit of water soaked in and sitting around...whew.

After all the foam was out I did a lot of research about putting in trim/one way valve/all sorts of other stuff, but ended up deciding I would never actually put in trim. For drainage I'll just add another pump vs a one way valve since lots of people have lots of problems with skis ending up quite moist. Therefore it was time to work on the big pink jigsaw puzzle that is reforming.

Using 2" pink home depot foam I worked from left to right getting as tight and full fit as possible. It wasn't the prettiest I've ever seen here, but I'm pretty satisfied. Over all, just taking the old stuff out and putting the new stuff in dropped my ski weight ~30lbs. Not too shabby.

Finally I got the tray fitted vertically by adjusting the height of the foam. Then mixed up some epoxy with cabosil to a peanut butter consistency and glued her in! I had to use a car jack to keep the little "wings" in the front pushed back where they are supposed to be. I checked on her this morning and she is nice and glued in, almost completely flush!

My next step hopefully tonight will be to epoxy glue the footwells in, then Wednesday fiberglass it all in!

Sorry about the long hiatus, hopefully there are still people out there that want to hear about this! Hopefully it will help some first timer in the future!

DAY 1:
So for starters I weighed my '14 rn superjet...356 lbs...*many expletives*. For one reason or another I picked up some extra weight this past season, must have been going too hard... ![/QUOTE]

So, you picked up the weight from the foam being waterlogged?!?! geez, never thought about that... what did the ski weigh originally? and, with your last/current post, I saw a SACK of plaster of paris... what is that used for?
is that what "cabosil" is?

So I never weighed my superjet to start with, and I bought it off of a guy, so who knows originally, but internet says somewhere around 300ish. The foam was WET, and water evidently weighs a lot lol. The plaster of Paris was for when I put my knee through the wall in my rental house haha. Cabosil is a filler made for epoxy in order to thicken it up. You can buy it from uscomposites :)

wow! so 50 something plus pounds worth of waterlogged foam!?!? crazy. funny you mention it because even though my ski is a restore, im not sure if it was ever refoamed...I doubt it.. so, when I actually drove almost 1,000 miles to pick it up, I opted for my 4 cylinder with the hitch hauler instead of the SUV because of the gas mileage. I knew the ski "says" it weighs 282 dry. The hitch hauler was rated at 350... so, I put approximately 295 pounds on the hitch hauler, distributed evenly the night before I left to get it, and it didn't even come CLOSE to bottoming out...well, got the ski, loaded it up, etc.. and when I drove off, lets just say an inch or so is being generous...
Made no sense to me at the time...now it does.. regardless, I made it home in one piece!
I'm curious as to how waterlogged it might actually be o_O

That 300 or so is most likely a dry weight too. Did you have any gas in the tank?

My brother has an immaculate 95 SN which weighs more than his sxi pro! Thats a 40 lb difference but we could not believe it had that much in it. Guess it could! Great info.

Where are you moving to in Michigan? A group of about 7-8 of us ride in the SW- Portage and Battle Creek areas. Weve got a bunch of friends between Detroit and Flint too. Riders are all over.

Sorry it took so long to reply! Big move up here, between getting set up at the new house and starting the new job I've been crazy busy. We moved into the Troy area. Lake of choice is probably going to be St. Clair, but I am not opposed to traveling a little!

Nice, isn't that st. clair lake the one that has some pretty clear water during the summers? I think I rememver watching a youtube vid with a guy that had like 20 standup riders on st clair.

There are a bunch of lakes in Michigan which are crystal clear. All sand, no muck. I am constantly amazed by the clarity of the naturural ones. Torch Lake up north is amazingly clear too. Kid Rock and some celebs have places up there, and theres a yearly freeride organized there as well thru guys on this site. Look up pics of it or Waloon lake, those are two of my favorites. Water so clear that boats look like theyre floating.
