'06 Super Jet Starter Questions

i think my starter went out b/c by 2 month old battery hasn't given my any problems. when i try to start it, the engine doesn't turn over at all but i hear a "zzzzzz" sound. so i'm trying to take out the starter and unplugged the negative battery terminal off the starter as well as the 2 bolts. there are two small screws that are approximately 3 inches long that i haven't taken off b/c i have a hunch that comes later. the starter is now loose and i can't figure out how to get it off completely. do i need to take off the flywheel? once i get the starter off, am i able to somehow hook up the battery to the starter to ensure it is the starter?
 
Sounds like it is your bendix. I think the zzzzzz you hear is the starter spinnig but the bendix not coming out and engaging.

2 bolts at the back of the starter and should come out might have to remove the exhaust

Once you disconnect all the bolts including the one with the wire attached to it the starter will slide right out .you might have to pry it a little as it has an o ring that holds it in and keeps out water .

I would try a known good battery before doing all that and try cleaning all the connections first too .the starter is the last .thing you check usually ,because it is the most expensive to replace
 
i finally got the starter off and would like a little more explanation how to test it. specifically what does "ground the housing on the bench to test " mean?

yeah, i called a friend who told me the exact same thing that i should've done this last but since it's already off i may as well test it, right?
 
thank you guys so much for this help! the starter turns over but i'm told it's supposed to turn so fast that it's kinda hard to hold on to it while it's turning over. so i'm now charging the battery, which is what i should've done first, and will test it again in a few hours. unless there's something else i should do???
 
new starter problem

turns out the battery was bad so i got a new one at walmart. before putting the pipe, manifold, gas tank, starter, etc back together i decided to check the starter by touching the starter terminal to the positive battery terminal and touching the negative battery cable to the starter housing. nothing happened! yesterday the shaft coming out of the starter would turn over but was told it should turn so fast it should be difficult to hold onto. i am now charging the brand new battery which the directions on the box tells me to do but i've never done before (which may be why i'm in this situation). the charger says i'm at about 4 amps. any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!
 
i was getting frustrated b/c the starter wouldn't turn over at all with the new battery so i just used jumper cables & the starter turns over so fast i have to hold onto it tightly or else it will come lose. i'm going to put everything back together now. all i had to do was replace the battery- oh well.

I'll tell you what, even if you get it going with a fresh battery / new starter, you may
still have a bendix on its way out. A really fast starter will mask a bad bendix, for a little while.
On a Yamaha the bendix comes out the front (do not need to remove starter/exhaust but you need to pull flywheel), and so is a relatively easy repair. I would have done that first based on the description. (It is actually called an idler assembly -- might be smart to have a replacement on hand for next time)
