Any idea how much it costs to get an OEM rebuilt? I got an impact driver and I can't loosen any of the bolts up. I'm not sure it's possible to take apart.
Are these engines able to recharge the battery while riding like a car? I'm just curious if there is some kind charging system built into the magneto. If not, I guess i should be throwing it on the battery tender after every use.
You have everything you need and don't need to get anything to make it fit.
The JS550 and JS300 hulls were the same. The 300 & 440's had a different pump than the 550's but most people prefer the 300/440 pump. Just swap engines and electronics and you should be good to go.
I have a similar problem that I still haven't work out.
Theory 1: 550's use do have a rev limiter that has been removed. I read that the limiter can slow the fuel returned to the tank under normal conditions. Under red line it cuts off all the fuel to the tank and floods the motor. I'm...
Sorry for the late response Screaming. I've been traveling for 2 weeks.
The book I use is for a JS. It's an old Seloc manual. It says it covers all Kawi's up to 1991. I didn't even check to see if it has an SX section. Let me know if you need the specs. PM me if I forget.
I checked my book. It says you need to calculate the clearance between the height of the end cap shoulder and the depth of the guide van casing contact service. Then depending on your results you need to shim it accordingly. Then it gives me a table of shim thickness to calculated clearance...
I've heard of guys installing reeds upside down. I guess they only flex one way. Things run but not well. That could be one issue.
Have you adjusted your carb for the new reeds? There is a great link in the 550 forum (maybe 3 weeks old) about tuning a BN44. I've used it to tune mine. Maybe the...
Mine was shutting off after flipping to the right. It ended up being a fuel pick up. Someone cut the pick ups off the tank and put a fuel line in the tank that was long. It wrapped to the left side of the tank so when i tipped right the motor ran out of fuel.
You don't have a compression or...
I think you are talking about porpoising (front of ski bouncing uncontrollable). I have 2 machines, one has the stock ride plate, the other has a west coast ride plate that is about an inch longer than stock. I don't notice much of a difference between them when it comes to porpoising. I think...
Someone gave me a starter off a 1989 Yamaha WR500. It is the same as the JS550 starter but has an 11 tooth gear. I was able to swap the gears.
In case any needs to do this in the future (maybe even myself and I forgot) just use a socket that fits over the shaft and hammer the collar back. Then...
My 440 has been starting great all season until last week. It started turning over slowly. Then the next day nothing. I took the starter off and swapped it with an OEM I had lying around (never tested). That one cranks slow too. Then I swapped in a working Goki and it cranked fine.
I took the...
The starter is located against the side of the engin under the exhaust. If you are standing on the ski it would be on the left side. I had a good strong click too, there was just too much corrosion in the ebox and solenoid.
I had this same problem. There are 2 connections on the outside of the E-Box. One wire goes to the battery, the other wire goes to the starter. You can pull back the rubber boots that are on these connections. Then take a screwdriver or something similar and touch both connnections at the same...
I've been riding a JS440 and JS550 for a few months now. I've gotten pretty good riding them. I'm looking for the next step and I see lots of 650SX around for good prices. How much better is an SX vs a JS?
I'm a pretty light guy so I don't think I need a 750SX or SXI Pro.
I know everyone is...
One more suggestion to test it. I turned the output on my air compressor down to about 5psi and pressurized the water jackets. If there is a hole in them you should hear the leak.
Are you sure the water isn't left over water that was in the head? I pulled my head off before and I thought the water was drained out of the motor. When I pulled the head slightly off there was still water in the head that went into the cylinders. Can up pull the plugs after it dies and see if...
