You are assuming there is a problem with fit, that is yet to be determined. Pump misalignment could cause heat in bearings and decrease the radial tolerances causing the bearing to fail. Has anyone measured the bores yet, what is the fit

after rebuilding numerous starters over the years, I have found that the quad rings they use between the housing and end caps usually become stretched and as far as I know u can not buy them, (if anyone knows where to get them I would like to know) so I wrap the starter with self amalgamating...

Could be just a badly bent impeller. if they get bent from rocks ,sometimes it will not hook up at all. But the sound could be a few things ,bad pump bearings , splines at end of drive shaft where it connects with intermediate shaft. That is basically just back of the firewall, if u r not...
