Are you grabbing the driveshaft? The drive shaft will move,it floats between splines in impeller and coupler at back of motor. However ,if you're grabbing the prop itself,that should not move fore and aft at all.

Try a CDI without a rev limiter,( MSD), we all had similar symptoms when goin to B pipe,especially if you have stock pump.

Pole down=compressed state, up position,relaxed. I believe in the down position over time you would be more likely to loose "strength ".
