Sounds like the bendix teeth grinding against the backside of the ring gear. Then when you let off and retry it engages. Like mentioned above brass engine side bushing could be smoked. Inspect your starter side of the bendix for wear marks on the teeth. For what it’s worth my NLP9 and 14 both...

had to go with the super light flywheel as if I’m not the one holding the ski back even with a smaller power plant :) Getting there though. Cyls are at the shop. Bottoms being cut .050 then I’ll sleeve them and have the top cut .005.
