av fuel?

Don 79 TA

Still Fat....
I used Sunnoco GT100 at one time and then they swapped it to 100ll and still ran fine, had no idea they swapped it out either, it became a big political issue back in 02/03 in NY with the distributors.

i just run run Sunnoco Purple 110 now and get it nicely priced here
i used to run Sunnoco Blue 112, but the 110 is a pretty good quality gas

Ed from Full Spec recomended non castor based oil for race or av gas. Maxima super M, or golden spectro were his recomendations.

I have run 100% 100LL for 2.5 years and it has enabled me to run more comp and timing than pump gas would, but I have now found that the MS109 provides ALOT more power. Is the MS109 worth the additional 6.00 per gallon? IMO when I can afford MS109, that is what I am running and I have even found a 50/50 mix of MS109 and 100LL still makes great power compared to straight 100LL. ANd the dumb part is my comp is now low enuf to go back to pump gas, but I love the power of MS109.

Are you saying art has you running ms109 on pump gas compression?

anyone had problems using Premix and AV fuel? buddy of mine used 927 and 100LL. It wouldn't mix.

I premix my 3:2 100LL/92 mix at 50:1 with Amsoil Dominator. Never a problem, even when stored for a week or two.

You guys will probably burn me at the stake and start a flame fest because I'm saying this but I'm going to throw it out there anyway. I've rolled my eyes over people running av gas for years now. I just don't see the point of building an engine for maximum performance and then throwing a half @ssed fuel in it. If you built it to run on race fuel, F-ing run race fuel! Av gas is basically 96 octane on the standard that we're used to seeing and even then it's not equivalent to 96 octane race fuel. It's a completely difference weight and chemical make up. It's like the people who buy a high performance sports car designed to run on premium and then put regular fuel in it and stay out of the high rpms because it's cheaper. WTF?! Serously?! If you're specifically designing an engine to run on a different fuel, might as well make it E85. It has drawbacks similar to av gas which can and have been debated in countless forums all over the web.

I can kind of understand av gas out west since 91 octane is as high as you guys get but in most places I've been to, 93 octance is the standard for premium fuels. This begs the question of why even bother with av gas that's 96 octane for a whopping 3 octane points. Then most mix the 96 with 93 to make it more like 94-95 octane. At this point, why not just run the snake oil octane boosters sold at your local auto store? You get all the drawbacks of av gas for the slightest improvement. Even straight av gas at 96 octane is just barely more than 93 and basically just insurance in the event of deto in a prolonged high speed run which very few of us even do. Plenty of people here run programmable ignitions of some sort that can be used to retard the timing enough to make a higher compression engines run safely at high rpms on pump gas.

Please don't take this the wrong way as I'm not trying to attack anyone but I don't see the point. Just throwing out my 2 cents...

Are you saying art has you running ms109 on pump gas compression?

Is what I am saying is Art has me making more power than ever with ALOT less comp than I have been running. I run the MS109 for the additional power it makes in my setup. The difference in power between 100LL and MS109 is night and day. Art did port my motor for MS109 but the comp I am currentlly running with my YAK24L17 domes does not demand high octane fuel.

We are running our "pump gas" engines close to limits of pump gas when they are tuned correctly. Adding AVGAS is a cheap way to keep pistons from melting when the consumer uses last years gas or decides to ride in the winter without retuning the carb or just goes WOT on an empty tank.

That's bullsh!t.

One of my local airports has a 24/7 self serve pump. I've seen several others like it.
I have also gotten avgas at other airports by asking the responsible mechanic/gofer to get me a couple cans.

we pull in to the local airports with 5 gal cans or our whole airboats and have no problem getting av gas and I always have two extra cans on the boat so I have run AV gas and 50/50 mixes of it in everything form my truck to my lawnmower at one time or another but don't make a habit out of that because of the cost. In general I run the cheap gas in my skis every now and then I dump some extra AV gas in to clean them out but otherwise it is to expensive for recreation riding IMHO

my engines are set up to run mild octane 93 is fine and will run on 87 if it had to and I'm not going to argue the point of octane as I see some feel strongly about it but two simple main things I have found is 1) the engines run much cooler , 2) av gas helps keep the pistons and domes form internal carbon build up witch I commonly see with 93 octane motors (mine included)

If they don't want to sell it to you, then they won't. Citing BS regulations is just an excuse.
You may need to find a different source.

Buying av gas to use in something other than an aircraft is illegal so it's not BS but at the same time it's technically illegal to buy fuel from a normal gas station and use it in a boat or buy gas for use in farm equipment and putting it in a normal car used on the road. Last I heard, one of the small airports around here will only allow their gas to be put into an aircraft. No containers. It really just depends how paranoid the people are who sell it and no one really cares.

That's not the case in NM. Here you can readily put pump gas in off-road vehicles and/or boats. You won't be able to recover the taxes though like other states will allow.
