another ?, is it worth it to get a 61x mildly ported if I were to put it on a 6m6 bottom.
Brief history. I've run multiple combinations of 6m6 cases with stock and mildly ported 61x cylinders in my squarenoses and my FX1s. Started doing that as soon as the 61x cylinder hit the market.
6m6 case with stock 61x cylinder in my '92 SJ worked well with a taper bored 44, 175psi, and a b pipe. Then ported the cylinder, and I was impressed. Granted, this was "back in the day". Today, I'd probably think it was a pooch. Then added dual 38s, and really loved it. Got greedy and tried dual 44s - too much carburation, went back to 38s. Years later, "upgraded" to jetworks ported 61x cases and dual 44 redtops - now that ski screams. Still have that combo in it today. Use it to run buoys with SXR guys. I keep up, and even pass a few sometimes (when I eat my Wheaties). Took 2nd in both of my classes last Sunday, my first "real" race, and some of the SXR guys expressed surprise at the squarenose in front of (or close behind) them.

Keep in mind I have no hull mods whatsoever.
First FX1 was set up with stock 61x motor, 175psi, b pipe, and 46 Buckshot. Ski flew. Motor blew up and I stuck a Team Scream 62t stroker in it for 3 years. Sold the stroker (got an offer I couldn't refuse), and pieced together a motor from my spares. 6m6 cases, mildly ported 61x cylinder, 175psi head, b pipe, and that same 46 Buckshot. I'd have to check my notes, but I had to drop the main jet 20 or 30 points to stop the gargle. Ski then ran great, and had awesome pull, but clearly had lost a few mph from when it had the 61x case. Ran it that way for 3 years. Just picked up a 61x case for it in June and stuck that in the FX1 - along with the exact same head, pipe, and 46. Didn't gps it that way, but I could feel stronger midrange and top end. Didn't "flatten out" on top like it did with the 6m6 case. Went ahead 2 weeks ago and stuck dual 38s on it. Even better. Blip the throttle and it springs off of boat wakes almost like it did with the stroker.
IMHO, 6m6 cases with a stock or mildly ported 61x cylinder is a nice set up. Certainly good for bottom end, but there is a noticeable difference (to me) by simply changing to the 61x case. The difference is mostly on the top end. And, if you have aspirations to run dual carbs, the 61x case is a much better choice. If a single carb is what you're sticking with, the 6m6 case is less of a hinderance.
Hope this helps.
