Let's try to put together a glossary of terms we use so that people new to the sport have a reference. There's already a pretty funny thread going if you want to have fun with this:
http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/70797
Let's keep this one as a real resource for new riders and let off steam in the other one.
Glossary
Backflip Hull - a hull that is usually shorter, lighter and wider than a Super Jet hull. Designed to make backflips easier to do on flatwater. E.g. EME Q8, Lenzi One, Superfreak, etc.
Backflush - Running the motor while forcing fresh water backwards through the Pissers. Used to clear out the water system, particularly after riding in salt water.
Bore - The diameter of the cylinders. Reboring is the process of machining the cylinders to a slightly lager diameter which repairs minor damage and wear to the sleeves.
B-Pipe - Widely used aftermarket wet type exhaust pipe made by Factory Pipe. The pipe adds better bottom end power.
Bypass -
Cases - The lower shell of a motor housing the crankshaft. The Intake Manifold attaches to the side and the Cylinder attaches to the top. Fuel flows into the cases from the carbs through the intake manifold.
Case Porting - Modifying the shape and size of the fuel inlet ports to match the manifold shape, and to adjust the timing of fuel delivery for improved performance.
C.A.T.S. - Acronym for "Cheap Arse Trim System". This is a low cost, home made version of the turnkey trim systems that are commercially available. See Trim System.
CDI - CDI = Capacitor Discharge Ignition. Electronic ignition system that fires the spark plugs with variable timing depending on rpms. Is normally contained in a permanently sealed box and housed in the Electrical Box.
Cylinder - The cylinder is the chamber structure that the piston moves up and down in. The cylinder has exhaust ports to eliminate combustion gases.
Cylinder Porting - Modifying the shape and size of the exhaust ports to match the manifold shape, and to adjust the timing of burnt gas expulsion for improved performance.
D-Cut -
E-Box - Abbreviation for Electrical Box.
Electrical Box - A sealed box containing CDI, coils and starter solenoid.
FCV (Flow Control Valve) -
Foot Holds -
Front Foot Hold -
Hand Holds -
Holds - Abbreviation: either Hand Holds, or Foot Holds.
Impeller - The impeller is the main component of the jet pump which converts motor rotation into a jet of water.
An impeller is a rotating component of a centrifugal pump
Centrifugal_pump
, usually made of stainless steel which transfers energy
Energy
from the motor
Motor
that drives the pump to the fluid
Fluid
being pumped by accelerating the fluid outwards from the center of rotation. The velocity achieved by the impeller transfers into pressure when the outward movement of the fluid is confined by the pump casing. Impellers are usually short cylinders with an open inlet (called an eye) to accept incoming fluid, vanes to push the fluid
Fluid
radially, and threaded bore to accept a driveshaft.
Intake Manifold -
Jugs - Another term for Cylinders.
Kill Switch -
Pisser - A nozzle which ejects cooling water to provide a visual indication that the cooling system is flowing correctly. May skis have multiple pissers.
Power Take Off - The rear of the crank shaft which is the power drive to the impeller.
Prop - Alternative term for impeller. See Impeller.
PTO - - Abbreviation for Power Take Off.
Pump -
Pump Cone -
Pump Shoe -
Pump Veins -
Reeds - Abbreviation for Reed Valves.
Reed Valves -
Refoam -
RN - see Roundnose
Roundnose - Also abbreviated to RN. A Yamaha Superjet for 1996 onward. Named after its rounded nose. It has the same hull as a Squarenose, but a different top deck with slightly higher handlepole pivot making many prefer the handling of the Squarenose in stock form. However, the large number of aftermarket hood and pole options for the Roundnose make this the preferred hull for freestyle.
Run On -
SN - see Squarenose
Squarenose - Also abbreviated to SN. A pre-1996 Yamaha Superjet. Named after its square shaped nose. It has the same hull as a Roundnose which replaced it in 1996, but a different top deck. The lowered handlepole pivot makes many prefer the handling of the Squarenose in stock form.
Stinger -
Total Loss - A non charging ignition system. This draws all electrical power from the battery, rather than from a flywheel assembly which generates electrical current from the rotation of the motor. This allows the flywheel to be significantly lighter, which in turn allows the engine to spin up faster creating improved throttle response. The negative side of Total Loss is that the battery must be regularly recharged since it does not get charged while the motor is running like traditional ignition systems
Trim System - Mechanism which rotates the pump exit nozzle upwards by pulling a lever on the left handlebar. Used to increase rotation for backflips and other tricks, as well as for building larger flatwater setup wakes.
