Making a cooler out of a hull

So I recently picked up an old 300sx that I am gutting and turning into a cooler. I know people have done this before, so I would love to see some pics and just hear general ideas about how this thing could take shape. We are determining if we want the pole and hood to open up like usual or to the side so it's easier to access while you're sitting in the water next to it.

Should be a fun little project and a cool extra to have at the lake/river/beach!

Step one: make sure it's registered at DMV and you have the papers current.

I'm pretty sure if it floats and looks like a boat, it must have registration

So maybe I can glue a palm tree to it and make it look like an island lol. That would be a damper to the plan though. I have the title, but don't want to have to register the thing.

Damn, I just picked this one up.. It only came with an instruction manual though..

1. unpackage
2. insert air
3. close nozzle

I wouldn't worry too much about the registration thing on it. In Missouri, I have never been asked to see registration. I have once had a water patrol officer check out my sticker just to make sure I had current tags on it, but that was only because I did something stupid.

Make sure your ski(with the motor) is registered and that should be good.

If there is no driveline in the cooler ski, I don't see why you would have to have it registered. I guess if anything check with parks and wildlife or the DMV about it. They will give you the legal answer.

Where did you get that? I need two for the kids.

Thanks

If it doenst have a motor then you dont need to license it. Its like a canoe, or paddle boat.
It would just sit on the trailer or somewhere real close to you when you werent riding anyways... :D

Quickest response from the government ever.... Emailed him as soon as thread was started..

WOW! Great to know!

They will still can give you hard time in NJ... and they definitely will if it contains beer or any other alcohol on a beach; or an open container while on a trailer or inside a vehicle, either it's moving or not.

Anyone else got any pics or cool ideas?

One we came up with is somehow molding cup holders in the tray or the hood.

What I personally wanted to do on one(on a couch though with more room) was put a beer tap on the side and put a keg inside. It would take a rather large ski to do that, but how badass would it be to just have a tap on the side of the ski instead of a pisser?

Also, I wanted to install a couple batteries and have a marine radio and a couple waterproof speakers.

That is an awesome idea!

Maybe there is hope for this '96 GTX after all!

I cut my FX1 in half and made it into a cooler. Still building it but the idea of my cooler will be like an outrigger.

http://free-photo-download.info/fre...utrigger_canoe,_huahine,_french_polynesia.jpg

The FX1 would be the boat, and the pontoons on both sides would be the "omas." I am using 2 sets of tubbies and putting them together to make an oma. I will be using a 1/2" aluminum bar attaching each oma to the FX1. They will be bolted onto the pole bracket area as well as the angled dash board.

My cooler will be towed behind my ski and can be used to hold tools/gas/drinks etc.
