Looking at a completely Stock 1996 RN SJ. It appears to be quite clean. Ask price is $2000. What should I be looking for? Owner is the 2nd owner and owned it for quite a while, but does not know much about it. Thoughts/comments?

Does it run? What compression does it have? Any oxidation (as in salt water use)? Is the hull intact? Any idea of number of hours on it?
There is a guide either here or on sbt for buying a used ski, do a search.
2000 sounds fair, assuming it is in decent shape. figure a 2000 goes for about $3k, so a 1996 could go from 1500-2500 depending on the condition, mods, etc. If you could get it for 1800, that would be decent. All the questions above will factor the price. i love buyin from 40 yr old dads who weren't really into the standup. sadly, i don't love buying a used surf ski that has been backflipped 100x.
The owner says no cracks in the hull, freshwater use only and no idea on compression. I have yet to see it but will hopefully go take a look this wknd.
He has no idea of the hours and says he is tentative to start it in the cold weather (which worries me).
i wouldnt pay $2000 for a stock 96 sj that wont fire right up. especially in the winter. bring a compression guage when you check it out. even a cheap one thats not accurate if you have too. just make sure the numbers are the same or pretty close. iwould maybe pay $1500. you would be better off paying a little extra for a sj with some goodies already on it that'll fire right up
Opted to take a pass. Too many question marks with this ski. I am in no rush as there is snow on the ground here, so I still have time to shop around. The hunt continues. Thanks for the help
