Foothold progress...and questions

Alright, I started tearing down my ski to install footholds (750sx). I'm going to buy some soon.

But, I also need fiberglass, resin, contact cement, and foam.

So, can anyone tell me what I need? What type of fiberglass and what size? What resin do I use? What contact cement do I use? What foam do I use?

I've been searching but haven't had any luck finding these answers. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. Here are the pics...

US Composites has what you need
Use epoxy resin and cloth for footholds
DAP weldwood red for turf
I used 2 part foam also from US Composites
but some people us ping pong balls (search!)

what ever you DONT get the "non flamable" weld wood!!!!! it doesnt set up right and doesnt hold good. i used it recently it was a nightmare!! next morning it still wasnt even bonded. get the normal stuff with red label. it works like a champ

Which resin thick or thin???

And which foam do I use? 2lb/3lb/4lb/8lb/16lb density?

depends, if it is dry inside, like mine was, it takes very little
I used 4 pound kit of three pound density http://www.shopmaninc.com/foam.html
if it soaked, you will have to refoam and that takes more

Thats not too bad. My brother re-floored/carpeted our boat so I might check out and see what he has left. I know he has some epoxy resin left, just not sure if it will be suitable.

I would also recommend rivets and a rivet gun to fully secure them to the hull.
Use 2:1 laminating epoxy resin and get some milled fibers and cotton flocks to make an epoxy paste to seal and bond the footholds.
You should also re-inforce the tray area with some good 1708 bi-axial mat
When you are ready to foam , drill a 1 inch hole directly over the footholds on top of the gunwale then you can use 2 lbs 2 parts closed cell foam to fill the area till it come out the top

Stupid question...but will the rivet need to be drilled first, and will it go through?

Of course you have to pre drill the holes. Start with the bottome of the foothold and then work your way around

Ah thats what I thought. I just wanted to make sure. I've never actually riveted anything in my life...but i've seen it done...and its used on airplanes. lol

I've already got the 2:1 epoxy resin, and I've got the 2lb 2-part foam...which hopefully I'll have enough of.

so where are the footholds? I dont see them in any pics.

But I plan on buying REV's because they are 20 minutes from my house.

REVs are good holds.
I tried the pop-rivet root and as you pulled on the handle
they would crack
Used ss screws instead to hold in place.
glass and epoxy strips then remove screws.
build up several layers of cloth w/epoxy and it will be stronger than the hull!

Just remember, revs require a lot more work.

Maybe just on the revs. I use and reccomend rivets on all my footholds and never had an issue with cracking as the rivet is inserted.

I tried it with REVs and before the pop rivet snapped
I heard "tink" and saw crack, so I re-grouped and went with ss screws
my second set of REVs I got were very different from the first
so it may be batch/day/phase of moon dependent

I didn't leave any screws or rivets in on mine. I mixed up a nice thick paste of resin and cabosil filler, smeared it all around the edges then screwed the footholds down. Then you scrape off the excess paste and allow to cure. After that you can remove the screws and glass over the edges for reinforcement. It's as tough as old nails that way and you don't have to worry about cracking due to rivets.

i would go with wcf footholds over the revs as said b4 they are a bitch to install and turf and IMO uncomfortable !
