New chin pad design

Is it me or are the aftermarket chin pads missing something. While they look great , I think they do very little in the way of protecting . I know I'll hear someone call me a puss . Well .... if protecting my handsome face and grill make me a puss... I wear the badge proudly .

Have any of you come up with a design that looks good , functional and stays within the parameters of the definition below ?

PAD
noun

A thin, cushion like mass of soft material used to fill, to give shape, or to protect against jarring, scraping, or other injury.

I have thought the same thing in fact I have considered building my own. I am just starting a superjet build now but I can see the concern already, I will share what I come up with.

The only reason I can see for a 'padded' chin pad is for your butt when you are doing loser hood tricks. My newest TOBY chin pad is narrow and unpadded and kills my arse. lol

OEM pad works for me as long as you do the small plate reiforcment on the bottom tab area.
The only thing that sucks about the OEM pad is that after a long time it can get water logged and doesn't drain well and then can weigh a lot.

I've never needed protection from a chin pad. If you're wearing a helmet, I see no reason why you need the chin pad to be protective.

One of my earliest Standup-related injuries was caused by an OEM chin pad coming off the pole during a sub and smacking me in the forehead.

i am always worried about the under parts of the steering system on my knees, the bolt and pin..... with the stock set up on the SXR it has saved me a few times.....thinking about keeping when I make the switch to 4 deg bars.

That is also what i'm talking about . i understand helmets and wet suits serve as the best protection , but there are a lot of other things to smack / cut your self on . When it's 98 degrees you really don't want to wear those items. It just seems most of the designs don't offer much in way of protection. The pad i designed last night was admittedly an exaggerated version... an " artistic impression " if you will . Just doing some brain storming , there is always a better mouse trap .

See thats the problem, remove the glass, arrow and other sharp objects and you will be fine. Oh just dont let your face hit that chin pad, it will hurt.

Matt, I use to think better of you, but not after that comment.

Hmm, I may be wrong but wasnt Johnny Havel wearing a helmet when he gashed in the bridge of his nose at the 08 Daytona ride? I believe it was from his chin pad.

Yep I feel the same, a few years ago a made a chinpad that covers the same as the stock pad, is made of glass and I padded the front part and turfed the rest.

I guess that if you read all the posts on here you see why it never took off. nobody wants padding they only want smaller and smaller covers for the steering.

I think I ever only sold like 3 of em. Mine is still holding up, my only regret is that I didn't turf it nice in the beginning. I used 2 pieces of scrap because I figured it would only be a test part, well its still going and I am too busy with other projects to make a replacement when this one is fine.

yes it did smash his face in! but he was also way high in the air and running a chinpad that is flat and sharp on the bar end. with no pad. which is basically the design today. it shouldnt really be called a chinpad, more like a steering cover.

Yea I agree. I have a UMI crossbar pad on my ski and a turfed oem pad. but like someone else said, I never hit the padded area. My knee likes to hit the bilge on off switch mount under my on off switch. Pads only work when you actually hit them, which is slim.

Well I don't know about you guys but scars are the least of my concerns. I'm more worried about knocking teeth out. Sure a helmet does help but like was said before... not all of us ride surf so the necessity to ride with one 100% of the time isn't as great.

Do you hit the chinpad every ride? Of course not... Does the ski land on you and hit your helmet every ride... Of course not but many of us still wear it for insurance.

I had to look for a chinpad that I think proves Sportfish's point but here we go. IN2-H20's chin pad looks awesome but all it needs is a little sharpening and it's double as a knife.
