Florida state - Trailer laws?

I've been looking into getting a trailer that holds 2 Jetskis.

I found one I like and when I asked about the title, the owner stated "Trailers under 2k pounds only come with a bill of sale."

I've never heard of that. I thought all trailers, regardless of size have a title. They're required to be licensed, as well.

Anyone know if it's true that trailers that are under 2k pounds don't have a title?

According to the state of Florda, http://www.flhsmv.gov/DHSMVfees.htm there are listings for fees for trailer size.

All my trailers have titles.
If this one doesn't have one than you need to get one. Not that difficult at all.

You can just "get" a title for a trailer? It doesn't have a VIN like everything else?

You can get it titled as a home built.

I have no idea. I've not looked at it yet. I assumed it would have one, but I wouldn't know where to check for the VIN on a trailer.

i have always registered mine w/o a VIN.. no big deal when they are small trailers

I know it's not FL - but in TX, a ski/boat/utility type trailer, even if it has a title - is not titled by the state. They are registered and if there is a VIN, it is noted on the registration.

FL might be similar

answer: true, small weight trailers like jetski single/dbl in Florida are not titled...they are just registered by their vin # or " homemade" without a vin.

My trailer is not "titled", but it is registered and tagged. It is a double stand-up trailer.
Never had a problem re-newing reg, but the powers that be have changed, increased, and are intent on generating revenue anywhere they can. I expire in January. We'll see what hoops I gotta jump thru then.

Don't get me wrong, I also have a trailer which has never had a title yet is registered.
It's a trailer thus there are ways to register it with just a bill of sale or by claiming that it's home made.
You might have to get it weighed and they might assign a vin for it but most times they just do a visual inspection and that's it.

Here is the conversation everytime I have registered (never titled) a trailer.

Them: "Hi, how can we take some of you hard earned money today?"
Me: "I need to register my trailer"
Them: "Ok, do you have a title?"
Me: "nope"
Them:"OK, is it less than 'X' pounds?" (1000 lbs I think, but could be less)
Me: "Yep"
Them: "OK, we'll register it as homemade"
Me: "Righteous!"

No inspection, ever.

Florida does not title small trailers....I have verified this at the tag office...what they are strict on is this: bill of sale must be from the last person that got a tag for it or else they must contact the last person who got a tag for it... the registration is the title by VIN # or else u claim it's homemade and no VIN.

I have had 4 trailers in Fl and none have titles,including a brand new dealer bought one....

no titles for small trailers in FL. reg and tag only. if you dont have a bill of sale, you will need to have it weighed at a weigh station then register it as home made. ive never been through an inspection in over 15 years and countless trailers.

Last year at Daytona, I got a "warning" ticket for no tag. In my state, trailers don't have tags.( or regs, or titles) I have no idea how to avoid this issue again.

get a copy of your state's laws, laminate it, and keep it with your towing vehicle at all times.

oinkers dont generally know the laws outside of their jurisdiction. if you provide it to them in a respectful manner, theyll generaly see where youre coming from and be a'ight about it.
