Splitting 61x cases

When splitting the cases, the manual shows 2 tools, one for holding the flywheel, & one for removing the coupler. Are these 2 tools absolutely necessary? And is there a way to make your own?

Not to sound totally cheap but I don't want to spend the $$ for the tools since I don't plan on using them more than twice maybe.

Also the manual says to remove the pistons/flywheel/coupler before splitting the cases. Do you have to do all of that first, or is it just easier to remove those parts w/ the cases still together?

Thank you!

Depends on what you are trying to do I guess,if you are wanting to replace crank seals then no the top end can stay in place but the flywheel, stator plate and coupler must be removed, you can get coupler removal tools fairly cheap and a hharbor freight strap wrench will hold the flywheel in a pinch,a harmonic balancer remover will remove the flywheel from the crankshaft but may need back up with a propane torch and a few raps of a hammer on the end of the puller bolt.

I'm trying to totally dis-assemble the engine. The engine is locked up, pretty sure the crank is wasted. There is a decent amount of water in the case & its been in there for who knows how long. I figured I'd need the tools at some point but I just wanted to tear it down as far as possible before buying them.

Where would you recommend buying the coupler holder from? I checked parker and its $30 there, is that about the going rate?
