FX-1 144 in fx-1 pump question

If you go the glass work route you won't be facing welding mods again when your wear ring corrodes.....just a long term thought.....and maybe only a saltwater concern. I know my stock FX wear ring only lasts a couple seasons before it's junk!

yes except you can replace it with a wear ring with the plastic liner. no more swelling and if it does get chewed up. 30-40 bucks gets a new plastic liner for it.

Here is a visual look at why the rear needs shims even though you would think it would not using a bigger pump. The FX pump is on the right. They are both sitting level and the SJ Pump actually needs to go up about 2mm to center with the FX Nozzle. My FX also had about 2 or 3mm of shim on the original pump which gets me to the 5 I have shimmed it at to center.

Also note the large insulators on the FX pump which raise the pump up quite a bit.

what you missed I think is that the front on the small pump is shimmed in your pic. take those out as that is what it will be like in ski and that drops the pump what 3/8-1/2 inch? lower the rear to get it level and now the 144 doesn't look so good.

the ride plate with ribs is maybe 1/2 thick and you are now almost and inch bigger the way you think it will work.

here do this- put the fx pump in minus the tail cone and measure from the tray to the center of the shaft, then do it to the 144. when you get them even and the shaft is in the center of the bulkhead hole you're done. except for hours of grinding on the rideplate.....

Good Idea on lining up the pumps by measureing at the cone. I did not even think of that. I will check it that way tommorrow.

I got the ride plate to fit last night. Just had to shave the cross bracing off in the center and up at the shoe and it fits fine.

The Shims on the FX pump in the photo are because the SJ pump sits level on the ears The FX pump does not sit Level and that is the reason the front has to get ground down in the hull.

I added some pics for ref you can see with a straight edge the front mount on the FX sits higher.

Nope Finished the pump install with the stock pump shoe and road it all last year. I am headed to the LSFR this weekend with a newly installed 144 aluminum pump shoe and Hooker impeller. The pump shoe was harder than the pump itself.

Water tested is 2 days ago. It rocks. I think the Hooker pumped up the low end hookup from the 14-18 I had and the larger pump shoe has made the top end feel even faster but that was just my seat of the pants opinion. I will have to get another ski out against it to compare.

No shaft or mid shaft issues and it was mostly surf riding all last summer.

Nice pix...good topic. All I'm saying is double check your driveshaft centering (from the spline end to the tail end), if the shims are needed you have to use them. All boats are a little different.

Here are a few pix of what Blowsions answer is for the FX/144mm pump mod, "Bolt in". They cut off the forward mounting tabs and re-weld them (I think this is what Special FX was referring to with the wear ring life span/replacement, you can't use a off the shelf Yamaha part). The rear tabs were re-located also. For the guys that I've seen using this pump, it still required lots of grinding/glass work. The performance is worth it. :fing02:

Who are "Texas amigos Brian and Elmer" that developed this mod for Blowsion?

Does the blowsion unit require glasswork too? I would be interested in this mod, but am very nervous about cutting a perfect hull.

Which Hooker did you end up with? I did the Bonzai mod last year but retained the 122 shoe (bored out a little). It had bad cavitation off the line. This year I will install my 9/15 Hooker and 144 shoe. I also plan to enlarge the intake duct. Damn I hope I get hookup!!

Your doing exactly what I just finished in March. I got one of SnowXR's pump shoes and fit it to the hull and Impros set me up with the same hooker prop. It kicks A$$. The way my pump centered when I installed the pump shoe it sticks down a little farther now but I figure that just helps scoop the water up.

I found the 122 pump shoe bored out tended to cavitate unless you ran a bead of silicone with your finger on the inside. Mine cavitated so bad without the silicone you could not even ride it. After adding the silicone my cavitation was gone. At that time I was using a 14/18 stock blaster prop.

Hope this helps.

wave you're right on with 144 shoe install. pain in the butt. i did alot of grinding so the bottom of the shoe is close to the stock 122 depth.
i also ran a 14/18 last summer. now it's a 10/16 hooker with more compression and a lighter flywheel.
i'm running a 10/16 since i'm a super lite weight old man. 120lbs.

I just finished my yamaha 144 conversion. It was a lot of work but it completely changed the ski for the better. I made it so that any 144 pump can bolt right up. The next step is to create a good intake grate. So far I'm runing a rigged up/getto setup but it works ok. I run a 9/15 Hooker, PSI pipe, and single carb with milled head. It's amazing. PM me if you want some pics.

Show us the intake grate.

the blowsion unit is the same as the bonzai bob conversion....

the pump will drop right in, but glasswork is needed to enlarge the intake cavity..

And rideplate grinding even with Blowsion coversion... much grinding, or shimming.

I would absolutely take on modifying the hull next time to accomodate a standard 144mm pump. Makes a mag upgrade that much easier. :scratchchin:

Idok, Ewok, and Butti got me talked into doing the 140mm on my current build. I've just aquired all of the parts except the bearing. They all claim it's a ton easier and a ton better.
Can't wait to do it.
