Lamey history

Questions from me, answers from Bryan at DASA/Racer's Edge/Lamey (why so many names?)

Dan Lamey was contracted by Yamaha to design the 66E?

Yes sir.

Dan Lamey used to work at R&D (I recently heard that Harry K of Group K worked there too??).

No sir, Dan ran the motor shop at PJS and when they went out of business, he started Racer's Edge, sometime around '88-'89. R & D sold the "Lamey" with their own name cast in the side(as a few others as well)

While at R&D Dan designed his cylinder? That is why some say Lamey, some say R&D?

No sir

What about the Riva cylinders? Are they Lamey cast cylinders too?

Yes sir

I heard the R&D pipe was designed for the R&D/Lamey cylinder and the package made nearly 150hp. The catch to that story is why doens't the R&D chamber clear power valves? Was it designed for the non-PV cylinder?

The original cylinders had no power valves. I still don't know why it was never "fixed" after the valves were added.

When did the Lamey cylinder come out? My guess is about 1996, because it used SeaDoo power valves and I don't recall those on a Sea Doo before 1995 (unless they were on a Ski Doo previously?)

I will say '92, because that is what I remember.

That makes sense now that I know they originally came with no PV's.

In addition to my billet HUGE bore (89mm) Lamey cylinder ATS_Scott and I both have small bore Lamey cylinders (81-82mm). His is PV, mine is non PV (I don't actually have mine here yet...it's on a boat yeah, on a boat!). Can they (easily) be resleeved to be big bore cylinders? What is the bore limit of the cast big bores (I heard 86mm or possibly 87mm?)?

So Many Names....

Racers Edge was the name of the speed shop in the first few scenes of the movie Fast and the Furious.

Right after the movie was released, we got calls from EVERYWHERE asking for foreign car parts in addition to our market.

Sometime after that, shops started opening with the name Racers Edge, we missed a few orders, but the buck stopped when we started receiving boxes of custumer and ordered parts from other shops named Racers Edge, due to duplicate names and shipping addresses getting mixed up.

So probably around '04-'05(maybe earlier) Dan changed the name to DASA.

The "Lamey cylinder" is obviously called what it is, but I don't know why the name stuck over the years, probably because of the European market.

We never marketed the cylinder by that name. Just the name that stuck I guess.

BTW, Dan didn't build the 66E, he was only contracted to design the cylinder. Yamaha built and provided the bottom end.

He (and Kyle) have well over a 1000 hours of dyno time, testing designs, pipes and pretty much anything you can imagine. There is nothing left in that engine to be had.

A cool side note, Dan had built a trick single cylinder test engine so as not to have to build three cylinders, pipes and pistons.

This debate has been ongoing.....

We sleeved the cast cylinders in '04(I think) up to the 90MM before we built the billet cylinder. The first one's went you Mr. Honda and Lenzi. We weren't happy with testing with the current port profile. Didn't run very well and reminisent of testing the T-Rex Banshee cylinder with the bigger bore sizes. The piston took away too much of the transfer area. The law of Diminishing Returns.

The cast tooling was getting to the point where we couldn't cast a good part, too many problems toi post that I have mentioned about in the past.

We started the billet cylinders and in doing so enabled us to much easier make whatever port design we wanted, enabling us to revisit the 90MM bore size and that is why we revised the port profile to enable the engine design to take advantage of the bigger piston.

So can you put a 90MM piston in the cast cylinder? The easy answer is, yes you can. The better answer is, you probably won't be as happy with it as you are expecting.

Bore limit iis somewhere in the upper 80's, depending on piston availability.
