My weight loss/food journal...

Instead of piggy-backing off of Kraqus' journal, I thought I'd start my own. I started Yesterday with eating less and writing down my calories. Today I start a program at the YMCA called "Boot Camp Extreme". They take your weight and give you a food journal and such. I'm sure it will kick my a$$.

So I'm starting out at 235lbs (according to my bathroom scale). According to those height/weight charts, for someone like me (5'7") with a large frame (broad shoulders, large rib cage, fairly muscular), I should weigh 143-163. That puts me about 72lbs overweight. I can tell you that I was once down to around 180lbs after basic training in 2000 and was pretty trim, but could probably still loose that 17lbs to hit the 163 mark. So yes, it's possible, but not probable.

My whole family is overweight. My Dad died of a heart attack at age 48. He's the same height as me and was probably 300lbs. He was also diabetic and didn't watch anything he ate. I do watch what I eat and I think I eat pretty healthy. Like I said in Kraqus' thread, I don't eat junk, I just eat a lot.

Here's me, the one that is clothed because my ski is still in a thousand pieces.

So, here's what I've had so far today:

Started out with a Muscle Milk light. 160 cal and 20g protein. They do make these in 100 cal ones also that contain the same fl oz, but these were at Costco and I figure 60 cal isn't huge in the grand scheme. The are very delicious and I have one as soon as I get up to get my metabolism going along with my multi-vitamins and stuff.

I also just finished (11AM) breakfast burrito (for lunch). I make it about as light as possible with:

1 high fiber tortilla (110), 1 egg (70), 1tbs real bacon bits (35), 2tbs mozzarella (40), and hot sauce (0) for a grand total of 255 calories.

I'll have another Muscle Milk around 3. That way I give my protein time digest for my workout this even at 6PM. I'll also have a apple or banana sometime if I get hungry.

I have not figured out dinner yet. Last night it was rice cakes (35) with 1/2 slice laughing cow cheese(18), dill relish (0), and a slice of ham(30). Each 'cake' was worth about 85 cal and I had 4.

I know rice cakes sound horrible, but prepared well, they are pretty good. I used to put peanut butter on them, but they tasted so good I'd eat too many and of course the peanut butter is so fatty. We don't have any peanut butter in the house right now because I can't really control myself around it. I'd go through a 15oz jar (Skippy natural) in a week on top of rice cakes. That's 2340 calories per week in just peanut butter. No more.

Dude it is amazing how Diabetes has made it into the main stream....
I know 4 people that were told by Dr's they were at border line, high blood sugar, and one of them does have it. He was given one of those "prick your finger" kits and has to do it 3 times a day......
The thing is if you look at these people they do not look FAT, they are big but not morbid obese or anything like that.
I know I am overweight, or as my GF puts it I am "Husky", but at 229 on a 5'9 frame, I feel so disgusted at myself I finally decided to do something about it. The good thing is that I tried my friend's kit and my sugar lever was 84 which is great, but I am not waiting around until I have to see a Dr.

Good for you and I will stop by often to see your progress...:cheer:

Just because you are not overweight doesn't mean you are healthy. I know plenty of people that can eat whatever they want and not gain a pound. This catches up with them eventually and that's why we are now seeing average weight people with diabetes. It's all the refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, bleached and enriched white flour, etc, etc. All of these cause major insulin spikes and years and years of doing so creates an insulin resistance. This resistance makes it so your cells don't absorb the insulin and it floats around the body and destroys cells. That's why diabetics usually loose toes and in worse scenarios, legs. The insulin attacks the vascular linings.

The best way to avoid this is to eat foods low on the Glycemic Index. For instance, eating 1 slice of white bread is worse than eating 1 tbs of sugar. Obviously you'd want to avoid both, but you get the point.

Just got back from the Y for the Boot Camp class. Wow, that was hard. Start out jogging about half mile. Then push-ups, sit-ups, stairs, lunges, jumps, hi-legs, and more push-ups and sit-ups along with dips and more lunges and stairs. Then we get to jog back the half mile. Total workout was 1hour long. I almost threw up a couple times.

I feel good now though. I know I'll really feel it tomorrow.

Big mistake I made today though, was not really realizing that I'd only eating 575 cal for the day before the workout. I didn't have enough energy. I'll know better for Friday.

For dinner I had 4oz of high fiber pasta (340), 1 cup of sauce (120), 2 chicken sausage links (200) and 1/4 cup mozzarella (80). For a grand total of 740 for dinner. Probably a little bigger than I'd have liked, but that still only puts my total for the day up at 1315 cal. I'm pretty sure I need to consume close to 1500 to maintain my energy and still loose weight.

Ok, I had 1465 calories today. Not bad. That was totally doable. I didn't really feel hungry, but I did eat like every 2 hours though.

I know people say eat more smaller meals, but do I need to feel hungry in between to loose weight. I've also heard people say you will get used to the hungry feeling, but if I eat every 2 hours, I don't really "push" through the hunger.

So that brings up a question:

Would it be better to eat 200 cal every 2 hours starting at 8am and ending at 8pm giving 7 meals and ending the day with 1400 cal? Or would it be better to eat 3 meals for 400 (1200 cal) and a couple snacks for 100 cal apiece so I end up with 1400 cal? Does it just come down to total daily calories, or is there more to it?

It sounds like you've done your research and you're doing a great job. Keep it up and good luck.

Oh and not to be off topic, but is that your tacoma? Probably the best looking taco I've ever seen!

My "research" has been a lifetime of reading and learning. I've always had to deal with my weight. Luckily, I don't have any health problems to deal with. I've tried about every diet out there with mixed results. The best I've found is portion control. Weight Watchers is the best system for this. In my food journal, I actually write down my calories and my WW points. Unfortunately most of these "diets" and "systems" are based around women. For me, I don't have a problem sitting in a room full of 30 women and I'm the only guy at a WW meeting.

As for the Toy: The guy standing next to me owns that. Pretty sweet Taco that's for sure.

eat smaller meals throughout the day...

Good. I like that much better. When I get hungry, I can just grab something small and not have to worry about going over because my last/next meal will be big.

drink lots of water.

I'm keeping track of that too. I drank 90oz yesterday. That was just a normal day. I know I drink more than that sometimes. I do not drink any soda/milk/juice, and alcohol is at a minimum. Usually 3 beers on Friday and/or Saturday, but they're usually Coors LT. Not sure if I'm going to cut that out, or just back a little.

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I stayed at around 1500 cal per day. Friday and Saturday I had 2 Coors Lights each evening, but that's it (included in the daily cal). The gym really kicked my ace on Friday, not looking forward to today's workout. I'm totally stuffed up from lake riding yesterday. As I type this, I have toilet paper shoved in both nostrils to keep from dripping on the keyboard. Workout will suck if I can't breath. Weigh in will be Wed evening. Hopefully I've lost something, though I don't expect but maybe a pound or two???

Good work! Keep it up.

Since I am going on vacation this weekend for a while I am cutting way back this week because I know I am going to be drinking and eating a LOT.

I also have finals this week so my working out will be limited.

I will say.....I have cut WAY back on my beer consumption and it does make a difference...even going from a few on the weekends to nothing.

the last 2-3 months I have barely been drinking. Now next week...it is ON :Banane25:

I am also on my third "jug" of water for the day already.

Just FYI, Livestrong.com has a section called daily plate that works well for tracking calories. It also has a good reference library for food calories and what exercises burn how much.
