obviously 110cc's is the difference but im wondering with the weight to power ratio that 550's have are they really any faster than 440's?
yes.
440 is way underpowered if you are more than 170lbs dont waste your time. dont get me wrong i started in a 440 when i was 17 and for the $ its still fun.

I ran a 440 superstock for "freeride" (before there was such a thing!). I had 550 mods before that and they can be comparable. The nice thing about the 440 was it lived forever and 550s seemed to be short lived. I beat the snot out of the 440 and it just took it. The 440 does end up with a lot more transfer volume becuase of the bore size. I thought my 440 was the shiz....we just didn't know any better back then!

Don't get me wrong! I loved the js550. Loved it better with a 440 pump in it. But it just plain wore the hell out. Bored 3 times, re-jetted, pump mods....Granted you end up doing all that to an sj too, but the displacement and a B pipe will make you scream compared to any 550.Stock for stock a 550 gets my vote but I bet you have had some killer js skis. My poor 84 stock js440 was a turd. I now have a 750 in it with alot of cavitation :smile:. I still love riding that ski and catch myself on it sometimes more than the sn I have. Didnt the 440 have a stronger crank than the 550?

I got tired of working on it all week and getting a solid 45 minutes of riding b4 it crapped.
Broke down and got 2 new sj's back in '03 and have had minimal problems ever since.
The sj flew out of my hands (bone stock) the first time I rode it. I was'nt ready for the bottom end hook up.
A square nose 701 is the way to go. I have rn's but the motor is there and you'll find a sn alot cheaper.

I've had two piston port 550's and I can never get them to start reliably. I've read about people having to do dual battery mods because of the same type of problem. I parted them out and bought more SJ stuff with the $$.
