About the primer, I usually run our XP without fuel in the primer lines w/o problems. To be fair, the carb is set slightly rich.

I had this same problem today! I'm fixing up this vxr I got with a trailer so I take it for a test ride. Start it up on the trailer and it runs and idles fine. Idle it out away from shore everything looks fine. Give it some gas and it craps out. Here it wasn't getting fuel I had to 'prime' it with some ether then all was well.

I haven't gotten around to swapping the primer yet but curious if that VXR had a primer and if so, how was it hooked up?

No primer all stock. I Just filled it with gas and ran it on the hose then took it to the river. It seems like it needed to be loaded up to fill the fuel lines with fuel.
