Hull repair

i recently discovered a small hole in the hull of my 750. it is not large, but big enough for water to come through. i bought a repair kit by bondo. if i am reading the instructions correctly, i simply cover the hole with the cloth that has been soaked in the resin mix. then sand and shape as needed. is this correct?

Since you said 750 I am assuming its a Kawi,Bondo ain't gonna work on the SMC hull,you need epoxy resin,if its a small hole try Marinetex,its not my favorite but it is epoxy based and somewhat cheap,if its a larger hole you need epoxy resin and cloth,West system has a small kit for this purpose as well as the new West System six-one epoxy that uses a caulking gun for dispensing,it runs about $21.00 a tube.

Most will disagree with me but if your hole is roughly less than the size of a nickle...you can use cloth with polyester resin just fine and/or cloth and cloth and bondo hair. I fixed a quarter size hole in the nose on my 750 that way. I used 2-3 layers of cloth on the outside of the hull squashed some bondo hair on the inside and it has held up to a lot of punishment. Ghetto? Yes... Functional? Yes...

Now I have also tried larger repairs with polyester resin and the cloth has been ripped off so it's ultimately your call. From the sounds of it though, I'm guessing you're either going to fix it with the supplies from the auto store or you're going to leave it. To the average rider, the thought of paying $30-$50 for epoxy resin and good cloth for a single repair and then having the resin sit for the next 5 years is out of the question.

what i bought was a fiberglass repair kit. it contains the cloth material and 2 tubes of a resin that are mixed together. it is not a large hole, but deep enough to let water through

yeah thats why I reccomended the six 10 epoxy,Jamestown has it on sale right now for $20.50,hard to beat,the fiberglass repair kit probably costs that much.

More details on this hole would be greatly helpful. If you're talking about a punture hole the size of a small nail, slap some glue on that thing and call it a day. Deep is a very relative term since the hull isn't going to be very thick in the first place.

Don't get me wrong...if you have a boating store that sells epoxy resin, by all means get that instead. I just don't have any place near me that sells the stuff so I have to order it.

The fiberglass repair kit contains polyester resin. Polyester resin generally doesn't contain the adhesion properties required to stick to SMC (sheet molding compound). If the hole is bigger and on the side, top deck, or on the bottom of the nose it should be fine with polyester resin. If the hole is near the back end, the polyester resin will rip off before the end of the summer at best. However, something is better than nothing in my opinion.

the hole is towards the front of the hull underneath the gas tank. basically, some sort of critter chewed through the hull. the actual size of the hole that goes through the hull is about the size of a quarter. the rest of the hole, about 1/4 to half way through the hull is about 3 inches ling by one inch wide. dont ask what the critter was looking for!!!!

Probably but why would you want to? That's like putting a beautiful paint job on top of rust. Maybe not that extreme but similar.

because my ski has been cooped up in the garage for way too long and now that the nice weather is here, it wants to be at the lake. not patient as i want to ride...

the other reason would be is that i do not know how to remove the poly resin. this hull repair thing is uncharted territory for me

If polyester resin does not stick to SMC why did I find 2 gallons of SMC repair resin that says POLYESTER resin on the ingredents in the bodyshop I work at???
