Finally making progress! but i need help...

Trying to get my 550 looking and running good for next summer just in case i dont have a SJ by then. Ive never worked on a ski before, or any motors for that matter, but my dad has been lending me a hand every now and then.

Questions:
-There is spot on the front of the motor with a cap that unscrewes, i think its on the flywheel housing. Do i need to add oil or anything to this?
-What should i check while everything is take apart? And what should i grease/oil?
-Whats the easiest way to remove my handle pole and bracket, im not sure how to disconnect the start/stop.
-Paint... what should i do? I have a paint sprayer, but ive never painted and dont know anything about types of paint, and what will hold for marine use.

So far ive done:
-most of the deturfing, just got alot of residue to remove.
-removed oem sponson things in the back, one of my rivets was loose and i dont think they actually do anything.
-removed all stickers (oem and ones from previous owner) except the one surrounding the gas tank (its next)
-Pulled the engine.
-A tiny bit of the ton of degreasing i need to do.

Whats left:
-Remove turf residue
-Fill holes from sponson rivets
-Clean/Degrease/Sand/Prep for paint
-Paint
-Reinstall motor
-Install new throttle cable
-Turf
-Smooth out the bar that was cut out of my grate
-Polish ride plate and grate???
-Some other stuff im sure im forgetting.

read the stuff in the tech faq

I wouldnt spray anything on your stator or pour oil in there.
Dont remove the side sponsons
no point in polishing the rideplate and grate unless you just feel like doing it

-What should i check while everything is take apart? And what should i grease/oil? Any grease fittings you see. Cables, bearing box and pump cone mainly.
-Whats the easiest way to remove my handle pole and bracket, im not sure how to disconnect the start/stop. Disconnects at ebox.
-Paint... what should i do? I have a paint sprayer, but ive never painted and dont know anything about types of paint, and what will hold for marine use. Do a search, tons of info

Any particular reason everything is apart???

Any particular reason everything is apart???

Pulled out as much as i can to make it easier to paint, and im considering gelcoating the inside.
Plus everything is coated in grease, so id like to clean it all up. Pulling the motor only took a half hour or so, and it makes it alot easier to move around.

If you mean what you said in the first post, about hoping to have a SJ in the not to distant future, I wouldn't put too much time and or money into the 550...unless you have BIG plans for it.

Hoping to only have to buy paint and turf, but i will be investing a bit of time.

Being my first ski i figure why not get experience working on it and painting/turfing before i step up to a sj. Plus i may not have an sj by this summer as much as i hate to say it.
