I have to remove a coupler from a 20-year old 6m6 that has been ridden in salt water almost exclusively.
I expect it to be a little snug. Here is my plan - can someone tell me if this sounds reasonable.
The motor is out of the hull, currently standing on-end, coupler end up, with penetrating oil soaking in the top.
I have a pretty good homemade flywheel holder (a 3-foot piece of hardwood flooring with appropriate holes drilled - it bolts on the flywheel just fine, with a hole to access the large bolt). I plan to set the engine on the garage floor, with the flywheel held firmly by a family member or unsuspecting passer by, and use an 8-foot long piece of 2x2 softwood to get the coupler to turn.
I could clean the penetrating oil off and heat the coupler / shaft a little with a small propane torch. Or will that just ruin nearby seals.
I could also buy the proper coupler tool I guess, but I don't want to wait a week for one to arrive in the mail, plus I think the 8-foot length of my wooden pry-bar might give me the extra leverage I need to get the coupler off.
Any suggestions?
Thanks all....
