How to properly disassemble??

Ok well i finally got my 550 home from the lake and its time to fix/repaint/returf.

It seems step one for me would be finding out what throttle cable i have and ordering a new one. that i will do tomorrow, but after that i would like to pull the motor along with everything else so i can repair the hull and get ready for paint. does anyone have some good instructions on the best method to do so? i haven't done anything mechanical wise with this jet ski since i bought it in the summer so its all new to me.

Step 1: Get a manual!

Also, check out the OEM parts section on Riva's site. Great diagrams from the manuals of all the parts and where they go.

Step 2: Trial and Error.

Take pics of things before you take them apart, that way if you forget how it goes, you'll have a reference. Those 550's are great for learning how to ride and wrench. I started with a couple 750 sxi's and had no clue what i was doing. Now, I build all kinds of skis. Don't be a afraid to dig in and take something apart. Thats how you will learn how it works and how it goes together. Also, parts for those things are a dime a dozen so if you mess something up a part - who cares! You can get another one dirt cheap or some gracious sole on the forum may just donate one to ya.

Step 3: Ride it till ya break it and then repeat Step 2.

Enjoy and Good luck with the project!

i got it, looks very helpful but i dont have a flywheel puller or a chain wrench. not 100% sure if ill need to pick them up or not but i probally wont get around to pulling everything for another week or so.

on a side note, how do i get the throttle cable out? both ends are disconnected but i cant tel if there is anything holding it in the nose of the ski or up the pole. Im not sure what cable ill need to order so i was going to pull mine and look at it, but when i pull it should i tie a string to it and thread it through to make installing my next cable easier?

If you are just pulling the motor for access, and not tear down, then you don't need to remove the coupler or the flywheel.

Don't pull the cable out yet. Look at the ends, if both are the same, then you need a cable with barrel ends. The difference is actually the carb end, it is either a barrel or a setscrew type setup. What year is your ski anyway? If you don't know look at the HIN, last two numbers.

According the the id on my registration its an 88 which sounds about right.

The carb end is a barrel type but i have an after market throttle lever. would i just order a js550 oem throttle cable and replace it? wheres a good/cheap place to buy one?
