Region 8 UWP Sport Spec Class for 2009 Season
At the final two rounds of the 2008 Toyota/Sea Doo US Regional Championship Tour, the racers and promoter decided to add a Sport “WaveBlaster” Limited class. This decision showed immediate returns – racers from all over the East Coast turned out giving full lines to the Sport Limited class on both Saturday & Sunday. Since then, there has been an overwhelming response to this class. With this, we are thrilled to announce that for the 2009 Season UWP will offer a new class - Sport Spec.
The Sport Spec class is intended to provide a low cost class for anyone who would like to race during the 2009 season. While at the Lake Anna Rounds, this class was limited to Waveblasters only. We have decided to change to a ‘spec’ style class for 09. It is our intension to make all Sport watercraft eligible to be as even as possible. To do this, each individual type of Sport boat will be allowed a certain amount of modifications to reach a level playing field. Below lists the boat eligible and the modifications allowed:
Eligible PWC for the Sport Spec Class:
Kawasaki ‘old style’ X2:
The original sport class PWC is also the one that requires the most modifications to be on a level playing field in this class. Because of the shortcomings of the X2 hull, it will be allowed more motor and handling modifications.
The Kawasaki Old Style X2 will be allowed to change the following:
Motor:
Aftermarket Exhausts and Waterbox
Aftermarket Head Shells
Aftermarket Intake Manifold
Aftermarket Reed Blocks and Reeds
Aftermarket Carbs
Aftermarket CDI Units
Porting and boring (Must stay under 800cc limit)
Handling:
Aftermarket Intake Grates, Ride Plates, Tubbies, Sponsons
Pumps (Magnum pumps are allowed for the old style X2)
Aftermarket Hoods
Aftermarket Steering Units
Hull Extensions
Drop Nozzle Kits
***In addition to the above-mentioned modifications, the old style X2 will be allowed to update to newer 750 or 800 motors from other Kawasaki twins. (Must use the above mods only)
Exclusions: (What will NOT be allowed to the old style X2)
Stroker Cranks
Total Loss Ignitions
Aftermarket Hulls

New Style X2:
With the introduction of the new style X2, Kawasaki has brought a new sport class machine to the table. Using the same hull as the SXR, this machine is capable of producing very good performance numbers. So, in order to make it even with the other craft in this class, its modifications will be limited to be equal to the rest of the eligible craft in this class.
The Kawasaki New Style X2 will be allowed to change the following:
Motor:
Aftermarket Exhausts (Wet style only, no dry pipes)
Aftermarket Reed Blocks and Reeds
Aftermarket Heads (limited to pump gas compression)*
Timing Advance Kits
Flame Arrestors
Removal of Choke Plates
*Aftermarket Heads are allowed to safeguard the stock cylinders from cracking. Because these heads are NOT to be a performance upgrade, compression will be limited to “pump gas friendly” zones – (under 185psi - According to Kawasaki, the 800 motor has a 160-180psi range from the factory)
Handling:
Aftermarket Props
Aftermarket Intake Grates, Rideplates, Tubbies, Sponsons
Aftermarket Steering
Drop Nozzle Kits
Exclusions: (What will NOT be allowed to the new style X2)

Yamaha Waveblaster:
We expect a large number of entries in this class to be Waveblasters. Having said that, the modifications allowed are intended to make it even with the rest of the skis in this class.
The Waveblaster will be allowed to change the following:

Aftermarket Waterbox
Aftermarket Heads
Aftermarket Intakes
Reed Blocks and Reeds
Aftermarket Carbs
Aftermarket Reed Spacers
Aftermarket CDI Units
Boring (no porting to cylinders – chamfering to be the same as APBA Rules)
Handling:
Aftermarket Props
Intake Grates, Rideplates, Tubbies, Sponsons

Drop Nozzle Kits
In addition to the above modifications, the Waveblaster will be allowed to update to the “760” or “62T” style cylinders and ignitions. (Limited to the above mods)

One over bore
Removal of Choke Plates
Handling:
Aftermarket Props

The Hurricane is basically a big Blaster. So, the mods allowed will be similar to that of the Waveblaster. The biggest problem with the Hurricane will be finding aftermarket parts.

Aftermarket Heads
Aftermarket Reed Blocks and Reeds
Aftermarket Carbs and Flame Arrestors

With the above rules, we believe there is an even playing field for each style of watercraft to race in the Sport Spec Class for 2009. Simply put, the models with the best handling will receive the least amount of modifications to motor, etc. And, the models with the worst handling will be allowed to modify the most. It is our hope that at each round, every rider, no matter what type of craft he or she enters, will have a legitimate chance at a win. The idea of this class is to create a low cost, rider friendly class for anyone, new or old, to enjoy.
While this class is not APBA or IJSBA sanctioned, it WILL be an Upstate Watercraft Productions class, with points and a year-end winner.
