A Different Trim Mod

After reading about some trim mods for X-2s some cheap some pricey I decidded to do my own version . I haven't seen anyone build one like this and have gone thru 1 version befor this one . This one has an advantage of the mechinism being in the ski instead of being on the outside like so many others I have seen the stock setup included which would be great for those who shave there hood and steering area. So far everything clears and works (out of water) but I am still building the rest of my ski (Shanex-2s surf X-2) and it will be awhile befor I can actually test it . Here are the pics of the build.

during the construction of this trim you have to make fixtures for making the pinch bolt that holds the cable from the grab handle . Working with stainless steel especially with small and large drill bits SUCKS and buy small I mean a 5/32 bit . But the rest is a brezze.

Nice job man, only problem I had was the stock cable was just not strong enough to pull under any real load without bending in 1/2. I'd try to reinforce around the female/female coupler and the exposed rods. My trim cable literally blew in 1/2 in pensacola. After reinforcing it, I cracked 2 steering nozzles... Becareful how much trim angle you setup.....LOL

here are the rest of the pics of the system after construction this was pretty easy to put together and maybe it will inspire others to build there own setup and see how they work .Fortunatly I had all the materials around the house from other projects . It would probably cost the same as the other aftermarket units if I had to buy materials and time cost . But building it myself it was worth it.

the trim cable bending in half was a factor and part of the reason it is on the inside of the ski ( mine did it once already ) I am hoping that this version will prevent that because it has less rod end to deal with . If I run in to trouble with cracking nozzels I have an aluminum on to modify so it would be a close match to the plastic one.

Awesome, if you do throw up some pics. Now that I see it installed I think your cable will be ok. The nozzle would be my worry. Really good job BTW. Came out great.

Thanks shawn_nj now I have got to get the rest of my ski together and see how well it will work .

I did a similar setup on my FX-1 (which uses an X-2 pump/nozzle) and it works great dry, but under pump pressure the cable stretched like a rubberband and did nothing. When I pulled the lever it felt like it was working, but the nozzle never even budged.

I hope it works as planed too but it will still be awhile befor I know . I do have a backup plan just in case it dont work. Since I ride mainly in surf I will be making a hollow aluminum tube that fits over the cable at the back of the skis trim cable just after the joint on the trim ring. It will use the thread and nut on the cable to allow for adjustment .Giving about one inch of adjustment. It will work in addition to or instead of the stock trim system and you won't have to worry about bending the cable with extreamly high trim angles. I will be posting some pics of its construction tommorrow. If anything it would be a candidate for c.a.t.s. :Banane35:

I am going to look at doing something similar to this on my build,I am going flat top so the stock setup has to go,I will also be going with a direct steer setup so the squirrel cage will not be in the way on mine.

so the sheath is actually moving the linkage? I think you should have designed a little more leverage into it to make it easier on the wimpy cable, also wouldn't hurt to do that on the other end as well. now get your ski running and test it.:newangel:

Well today I went to a friends shop to use his lathe to make a plug for my backup plan trim system. This setup would be great for those who ride in surf with there trim up all the time . Here are the pics.

This is what Ive done with my 550 trim setup. Used a lever to modify the action and use an x2 steering cable to connect to a throttle cable.

how well did it work for you ? Did the cable have problems streching?

I actually havnt ridden it yet. Still working on glassing the tubbies in and waiting on my yamaha conversion coupler.

I figure a throttle cable WILL get F'ed but I'm going to go to either a big bike cable or a big type of cable from terry cable.

Anyone else figure out a cable that uses kawi style sealing caps (the normal steering rod style) with a bike cable style end?

does anyone know if there is a motorcycle cable equivalent out of stainless steel?
