SJ build - removing bulkhead entirely?

Darin- both FLcracker and spug have no foam and sunk skis. All you engineers with your degrees are wrong. they float. go refigure cause you missed something or these guys had totally sealed hoods where no air or water could escape or invade. maybe it was just because the ski sinks nose down and the air in the gunwales could not escape and you have a trapped air bubble in there? dunno- just know spug and cracker and know they would not bs. well I mean about this otherwise they are regular PITA's :lmao:

I can see the no foam idea if the rear area was totally sealed so air could not escape,I have even considered it ,that was before I sunk my SX two days in a row,I know better now,something is going in there that holds air, be it boat fenders,coke bottles,kayak floats,truck inner tubes ,I am just not sure what yet.

You're misunderstanding something.
No foam is great as long as it is a sealed volume that no water can enter. In that case, it's more buyoant than a foamed volume would be. (Less weight)
Some people aren't comfortable with this "100% seal" condition, so they use foam instead. Again, a volume that water can't enter.
It doesn't matter what you do, as long as your total buyoancy (total displaced water weight (while submersed and sunk!) minus total ski weight) is a positive number.

After my experience at the beginning of the season I will always run foam. I wouldn't take the chance of anything leaking. If you want to run no foam by all means do it. With the money you save you can buy a fish finder when the ski sinks. All for 10 lbs?????

In some respects I do think it's a calculated risk using less foam than stock. But I think Darin's idea would yield about 50% foam reduction, with a 50Lb weight reduction over a stock ski. ( topdeck conversion, lowered hood )

Since I'll be foaming the nose and glassing that in, I doubt it'll even be 50% reduction.

The hell with the naysayers what would have happened 8 to 10 years ago if you told someone you were going to bolt a plate to the bottom of your motor and clearance the cases to accept a 10mm stroker and make a 1000 cc motor. They would have laughed. What about cracker that built a super light weight ski with a stock hull.

It only takes one successful build before everyone starts doing it. So go for it and if I wasn't so lazy I would build mine the same way.

I thought about another idea ...I wish I had more time to do a build like this. Lay a 2" piece of pvc on the bottom of the hull like it was installed as the scupper. Then pour foam around it pull the pvc out. Lay a super thin layer of glass over that so the inside of your chine is shaped just like the scupper exit. The scupper would be 100% effective no voids for water to hide in.

NO drain plugs work for that Mark.. LOL

Knowing you, it will have one of those emergency Blow up life jackets like Pilots wear, when the water hits the sensor it will inflate automatically!!!!!!!!!!!!
