300/440/550 550 Charging problems

OK I have a 90 550. Just jetted a 44sbn, has it running great(for a 550). But after about an hour or so the battery is about dead and just won't crank enough to turn it over. What do I need to check or replace?

An hour???

Is that constant riding, or stopping a couple of times to rest?

How long do you have to crank your ski to start it?

What's the age of your battery?

disconnecting the battery while it is running sounds like a bad idea to me.

check voltage with a volt ohm meter. should be 11-12 volts engine off. with engine running it should read above 12 volts depending on engine rpm. could be a stator or voltage regulator problem. i believe the service manual gives ohm checks for the stator I will take a look tomorrow @ work

the yusa batteries are the best ones I have found & was usually getting 2 seasons out of them. I am lucky to get a full season out of the others I have tried

stator is under flywheel in front cover
regulator is in the electrical box mounted @ back of the engine compartment

You should charge the battery and have another good battery hooked up with jumper cables then start the ski as soon as it starts disconnect the spare battery and check voltage as you rev the engine. It should read above 13 volts. If it does not check continuity on the green wires to the stater and between them and ground. The ground at the stater sometimes breaks at the solder joint.

OK so I checked it out and no voltage increase when I start the engine. Meter just sits there around 11.5 to 12 volts. Checked the 2 blue wires with the ohm meter and there is no reading at all. Just zero doesn't do anything. So my guess is the stator is bad. Whats the best course of action from here? There are a few used on ebay but that makes me nervous and PJS wants 150 bucks for new and that hurts right now. But we're not ready to call it a season yet. Still 2 good months here in the south! What to do? Thanks guys!

I got my stator used from the local shop. It was in a blown motor.

Used doesn't mean ruined.

Yea I know just paranoid I guess. More than likely thats going to be the route I will take. Just seeking all my options at this point. I've done my share of chaseing electric probs only to throw away money due to my lack of knowledge.

For a cheaper route, you could try taking the stator off and visually inspecting it. The problem could be as simple as a broken wire.

That's what happened on my SeaDoo XP. I just got a new to me stator and sent the bad 1 to CA where a guy wanted to fix it.

Some of your info is not right.

A fully charged battery should be 12.7=12.8 volts. If it's 12v fully charged, then it's junk.

Disconnecting the battery while running the ski is a great way to test if the charging system is putting out any power and will very quickly tell you if you need to be looking at the charging coil on the stator and voltage regulator or the battery itself.

If you can solder fairly well, you can replace the coils yourself.

jetskisolutions can probably fix it, or has the coil in stock to sell.
