300/440/550 550 engine trouble

i have a js 550 with westcoast pipe, hot head, reed cylinder adaptor, light porting, 38mm carb, 440 pump, and can't get it to run right. the ski ran better with the stock pipe or the factory pipe. how can i get my performance back? do i need the carb rejetted? bigger carb? etc. i was trying to run the reed adaptor with single carb only. should i go to 44mm or dual 38mm carbs to fix problem? thanks waterdog 357

Have you tuned the carb for the current setup?

I'd definitely try to get a SBN (square body fuel pump) carb so you can rejet and tune more easily.

its running like the power is restricted or just slow. no high rpm. it ran better with mild mods ( head, prop, factory pipe performance pipe, etc. ) i feel like i wasted money and time. i ride freestyle, need lots of lowend and high rpm. should i go back to more stock engine? dual carbs may help, but i want the low maint of single carb for freestyle.

Have you tuned it for the current setup, like SuperJett suggested?

What type of carb is currently installed?

The stock BN carbs cannot be rejetted.

ok, i guess i know whats wrong. i'm runninsg stock 38mm carb. i should get sbn carb. do you think i should run a dual setup 38 , a single 38 sbn, or a 44mm sbn? would the westcost pipe or the fatory pipe works pipe be better for the reed adaptor? thanks, waterdog 357

From what I've read, dual carbs give better performace. However, the performance difference sometimes is unnoticeable.

Get a 44SBN carb with an adapter and you should be ok.

It's only a 550. You're not going to get a tremendous amount of power out of it (like an SJ) no matter what carb you put on it.

I'd go with a single 44sbn. That's what I ran on my 550 mod with I believe 110L/125H jetting and it was awesome.

Personally I think you are wasting your time fooling around with the reed adaptor, they never worked that well, which is why they did not make them that long.

I ran an Ocean Pro 45 degree manifold with mine at first, and had to have the carb decked top/bottom and run the short Vortex flame arrestor and it still bumped the hood on some hard landings. I switched to a BCW 90 degree manifold and things were much nicer.
